Ben, if I'm a linux noob (especially with command-line), is rooting my phone worth my time? I understand after you do it, it gives you administrative access to everything on the phone, but I also don't want to void my warranty either (I'm not sure if this is a warranty voiding move?).

What do you think? Worth it, if I'm just getting my feet wet in this fandangled app world? Or just play in the shallow end of the pool for the time being? I have no problem admitting I may be in a little over my head with what this phone is capable of doing.

Thanks, man! :)

Dude, check out this link to Modding without hacking...

Cyanogenmod uses ADW launcher as it's base home-screen... Try out ADW Launcher (which is free) And the Launcher pro homescreen replacements, they're great, really easy to install (and uninstall if you don't like them) and are heaps better than the stock Galaxy S one imo :)

Samsung Galaxy S sporting Gorilla Glass to protect that precious AMOLED

Remember this horribly painful video? The Gorilla Glass protection on the Dell Streak is undoubtedly a selling point, and now Corning, the maker of said glass, has announced that the Samsung Galaxy S (which includes the Vibrant, Captivate, Fascinate, and Epic 4G in its brood) employs the same alkali-aluminosilicate glass shield. The glass is similar to the "helicopter windshield" stuff Apple uses on the iPhone 4, which was rumored to be Gorilla Glass at one point, and while neither tech is impervious to shattering, they certainly can take a beating -- but just try and do that pen stab torture test while we're not looking, alright? We don't have the stomach to witness another beautiful Android handset so roughly handled. PR is after the break.

Droid got widgets but I like app store better. iPhone 4 got better screen IMO and slighty better smoothness overall in animations with no slowdowns that I notice in eg desire. You can root the android which is awesome but there is jailbreak. But I don't like to pirate software anymore since I got the money to pay. But it's not about pirate software I know. I'm just curious. :) I'm no fanboi in any direction since I got apple products but still love win 7 etc and use Linux as well.

Written on my iPhone in a hotel room. ;)

The whole ecosystem of Apple and the requirement to use what they deem okay is the biggest reason it is mediocre. No real innovation allowed, because they stifle it if it competes with their own offerings or is thinking outside the box. Which most of the best apps do.

In the general sense, jailbreaking shouldn't even be considered an option. I don't think rooting is either, but you can download an app that will root your phone from the market. You shouldn't HAVE to jailbreak just to get lots of apps. Just like root isn't something really needed, but some apps require it because of the way in which they work. Most of the apps that do require it though, have non-root alternatives.

Yes, the screen is amazing, cool, but do you buy a phone based on the fact that it comes in the color you want? Or do you buy it based on its capabilities?

Plus, the update schema on the iPhone sucks balls. Android has gotten the scheme right. It just sucks that the platform itself is a bit fragmented.

Flash is on the Galaxy S and it only has 2.1, but 2.2 is awesome because there was a lot of focus on optimisation of the entire OS.

The screen is a capability though really isn't it?

The screen is not a capability, just an enabler. Think of the screen like a lens on a DSLR. You can have the best camera in the world, but if you have lenses coughHTCANDPLASTICLENSEScough, you will still have pictures no matter how hard you try. The screen is just a lens on an input source. A really nice screen makes the input look equally fantastic, but you can't take a input source and expect perfection.

Yes I understand this, but the camera is only one source of imagery for the screen. Everything else from applications to browsing will look sharp as a lemon soaked pin.
