ok I take it back, this is a cool track. people in europe go bananas for american references.
Eric Lott is good at explaining this kind of racism and appropriation. good suggestion and highly relevant ... but his point that it demonstrates some appreciation or love for the culture is especially important here.

I think it's a more general thing, not at all restricted to dance music. And of course not all europeans, that's a horrible generalization. But think about the way Native American culture is displayed and abused in Germany - for me this is the most obvious example |

I'm not being sarcastic. You think people over here lose their when they hear some time-stretched vocal snippet about NYC or Detroit? Even more generally, American culture is so ubiquitous and pervasive that people find it commonplace, even boring.
I don't really know about a German obsession with Native American culture, but I'd imagine that's got more to with New Age cultural cannibalism than anything relevant to this thread. |
