Yeah, he is an interesting fellow. First met him at detroit music conference and we have kept in (loose) touch since then. He has very, very diverse musical interests - he actually introduced me to La Monte Young and the Dream House (http://melafoundation.org/main.htm) Very adventurous and excitable personality.
It's funny because in one of the interviews he mentions this album 'The nightfly' by Donald Fagen, and the night I met him he was going on about that record :p Then when he came to NYC the next week he bought every copy in the city lol. I think he wants to make some kind of installation out of them.
Bottom line - fascinating and weird guy, and I look forward to his mixes, especially when they are of the deeper sort he mentions, as opposed to the 'entertaining'.

I'd say that rave music and culture is a New Age phenomenon. And actually, the German "Indian Clubs" I mentioned aren't really New Age at all. But that's a different discussion :)

A lot of the time, house music is just a reference in the techno that is produced in Europe. Same with Jazz.
I'll use two examples from my experience:
Jaga Jazzist from Norway performed at my local jazz festival in Saskatoon a bunch of years ago. It was a great show, but really they just used American jazz music as a reference to create something entirely different, almost more like experimental dance music mixed with prog rock.
Kruse and Nuernberg played a live set at Studio 80 while I was in Amsterdam a while ago. I've enjoyed their tracks & played them in house sets, but when they were playing live it really seemed like techno music using house as a reference. It's a pretty subtle difference, something in the shuffle, the hats, the clinical processing that made it definitely techno for me. This German guy I was hanging out with said "no, this is definitely house" so maybe I'm just a little slow. Still, when I think about it, they were definitely playing with a techno feeling for me - especially compared to the party there on Thursday night.
Of course there are lots of Europeans are making real house music that is distinctively European without resorting to American references, but I have noticed that sometimes people take some small aspect, some vague hint of a genre or cultural phenomenon and take it in a totally new direction. I like it! It's not bad, it's how art develops and takes on new forms.
I agree with you that people aren't going bananas over references because it makes them think of America and how much they love it. That's not at all what I meant.
that's the first place I visited on my initial trip to new york as a teenager! good stuff. la monte himself has gotten a little spacey at this point but he has the real minimalist legacy for me, the real stuff, totally pure :)

I think it's more about this obsession new producers have with name-dropping classic records/artists/sounds from the 70s and early 80s, whether it's Miles Davis, Chic, Kraftwerk, Pink Floyd or Juan Atkins. This whole sampling/appropriating/reinventing the past movement strikes me as the post-futurist floundering of electronic music. Dance music is no longer the cutting edge of what's possible, it's acutely aware that it has a history, it has legends and it has a growing tradition. People today are too keen to fit into that tradition, which involves endless referencing of the past in a very safe and conservative way.
I did very much find a lot to like about the above.
