Yeah, because this is all about the West and how great we are. We allowed them to do this! Go us!

That's not what I meant to say, and I don't think that's the intended message. This is all about Egypt and how great the contemporary world is - whether or not the technology came from "the West" is irrelevant. It's an Egyptian uprising, not a bunch of Americans taking over the place.

Hardly anyone in Egypt even has a ing cell phone, let alone a smart phone or the internet.

The numbers disagree with your statement :conf:

Cnn said at least 36 people died, so 68 is still an acceptable number.

Egypt is a very important middle eastern aly to the states; keep that in mind. No political figure has yet to say "give them democracy" or "mubarak has to stand down" They are just being very general with there statements, hoping preferably that the situation difuses.

Historically the US has always preferred dealing with non-democratic states- especially during the cold war.. I think they've preferred one monarch who they know well, and who will be around for a long time, compared to the corrupt leaders that often come to power in underdeveloped democracies

combine this with the fact that currently i think Obama's just trying to stay as much out of the limelight as possible, since the US has no money whatsoever, and they're already stretched for troops, and their inclination will be to stay out of it imo

they also have a pretty dodgy history with almost every country in the middle east (excpet israel of course which only kind of counts since its history is so short)

Can't argue with you there except for the last statement. Politically, Egypt has been the only arab country, as far as i know, to stay neutral or support Israel since after the 1967 and yom kippur war (1973). This is not very likely to change since Egypt is a strong aly with the US who is a strong aly of Israel.

With regards to other arab countries, no doubt there has been shoddy history between them, this is primarily due to Egypt's support/neutrality (albeit mostly political) for Israel. This and Egypt's strive to become a more secular and westernized nation.

yeah sorry i meant between the US and other arab countries: Egypt supports israel (kinda) because of the US, and because of a few conflicts around the time you mentioned, but i actually meant the US won't be hastily getting at all involved in arab states since generally it makes no end of trouble for them...

Military jets flying overhead this evening. It's gonna get heavy I think unless there's more international support.

Has anyone else noticed that the Egyptian protest signs have better English spelling than American Tea Party signs?

They are completely mistaken, most people have more than one cell phone ;)
