Google launches Person Finder for Japan following devastating earthquake

Following a devastating 8.9-magnitude_earthquake that struck 230 miles off the coast of Tokyo, Japan, Google has announced a free Web-based tool that will help people locate friends and loved ones. The massive earthquake — one of the largest ever recorded — struck overnight and was following by a series of intense aftershocks. Tsunamis measuring over 20-feet tall were triggered, and the power of the tremendous quakes will send massive waves all the way to the west coast of the U.S. and beyond._Google’s Person Finder tool is already home to over 7,000 records, intended to help those with friends and family in affected regions locate loved ones with whom they may have lost contact._Hundreds have already been confirmed dead in Japan and many more have been reported missing. Our thoughts are with those affected and we urge readers to provide any aid possible if they are in a position to do so.

Not to brush this disaster off lightly, but its almost impossible to compare these two disasters. The tsunami in 2004 killed over 230,000 people, and it was affecting countries where homes weren't nearly built up to the standards that were in Japan.
Watching the video, I'm amazed that so many people managed to survive it unharmed. |

The infrastructure, man hours, work and energy involved put forth into Japan is much higher than it was in Indonesia.
Now all that was destroyed. There were more people that died in that disaster than this one. But the built land is what I think he was talking about. |

wow...it really is scary hearing about all of these natural disasters happening oh so frequently....and not even how frequent they occur, yet the magnitude of the disaster and the damage it costs...
look at how mangled the inland is...
my prayers go out to those out in Japan it really is a miracle the amount of people that came out of that alive
did they have a better tsunami warning system in place than Indonesia? i bet you 99% of the buildings had way better infrastructure too |

Dammit... now I gotta wait another year before I start eating asian seafood again.
I don't know how poeple possibly kept on eating shrimp from Thailand after their tsunami. |

I meant that the wave was worse. Not the death toll or damage to infrastructure...

The Tokyo Tower is perhaps Japan's most iconic structure—a mammoth symbol of advanced modernity. And today's 9.0 magnitude quake rocked the 1,091 foot-tall steel tip completely crooked—what must be an unnerving reminder looming over Tokyo's residents.
The tower, constructed in 1958 based on inspiration from the Eiffel Tower, stood as an emblem of an increasingly modernized (and westernized) nation. The structure is both a crucial part of Japan's media network—broadcasting TV and radio signals—and Tokyo's tourism trade, having drawn over 150 million visitors since its completion.
Tokyo appears to have been spared from the earthquake's destruction, but the damaged pinnacle surely serves metaphorically as the broken heart of a wounded country. |
