it's crazy the amount of #asot500 hashtags on twitter have people just eating up every track that is vocals.. but if u look at some of these people's profile.. they are REALLY young or just really new to the scene...which is fine (even my own newbie friends LOVE IT.. i sometimes cringe a bit lol)

i think the longer u been listening to edm..the more you expand your horizons into different music whether it be something harder and less vocals or totally diff like minimal/techno

i think it just cycles a bit.. im sure a lot of us use to be big dj mystik fans =P

i agree. 3 yrs ago i would've loved his set, now it was wayy too boring. i've progressed into more techno/house/tech influenced music.

Ya, I would've been all over that set 7-8 years ago. Definitely moved on from the vocal craze though. I only want a vocal dropped every 25-30minutes or so now.

some people have got it right saying that it's what you could expect as it's a huge festival set that's being broadcast. i'd like to see the numbers of people tuned in, but i'm sure that there was a HUGE following: being that it was associated with ultra and had armin's name attached, i'm sure there were tons of people listening who had never heard gareths name before.

the set wasn't to show his chops as a dj, but rather to get his name out there for his productions etc...and with the energy in that tent, it's fine for a dj to play 2 hours of hands-in-the-air stuff. some tranceheads would hate it, yeah, but the overwhelming majority of people in the tent were probably going totally bonkers

let me use this opportunity to state how glad I am I gave up on trance years ago and went to the techier dark side.

No one should be surprised that most DJs at major events will play songs that will appeal to the highest number of patrons.

Most TAs would have a better chance of being satisfied with a particular DJ if they see the DJ at a smaller venue.

I'd honestly say Gareth started "selling out" over a year ago. His Northern Lights album was a huge disappointment in my opinion. He's definitely following in the path of Armin.

"Sell out" is a phrase that gets thrown around a lot on this forum. It implies that a DJ/producer is not being authentic for the sake of making more money. If GE (or Armin or Tiesto, etc.) truly enjoys the music he is creating, that may disappoint you but that doesn't make him a sell out.

How do GE or Armin or Tiesto really feel inside about their music? Maybe they are making artistic compromises in order to make themselves more marketable. It doesn't really matter to me as a patron because I always can move on and find another DJ that plays a style of music that I like. I loved "Elements of Life" but hated "Kaleidoscope" so I follow Tiesto less often.

so i can definitely say that sander van doorn's set at asot 500/miami is the best asot 500 set i've heard so far.

he does play a lot of house though..but the crowd seemed to enjoy it.

Yeah but most people who are there to enjoy the music would want some harder stuff. Simon Patterson and CL throw down the best sets these days, everyone else has started playing too much cheesy that has turned me off from trance lately.

All these DJs the past 18 months have just gone overkill on the vocals. I tried listening to Cosmic Gates set from Beyond Wonderland, wtf? That isn't the Cosmic Gate sound. I remember seeing Cosmic Gate back in March 09 and they never played the they do now.

Vocal trance turns off alot of the original fans, and that's a true shame

Where did you get Cosmic Gate's set from Beyond at? If you don't mind me asking :)

OHHHH YA +1

seems like no matter how popular trance djs get, theyre never satisfied. they always want to be more popular, so they pimp out their sound with cheesy vocals hoping to become more "mainstream". never ceases to amaze me how pretty much every trance dj goes on this trajectory.
system-7
too bad for this set, GE played solid trance from start to finish last year at Circus.
