I've been to massive parties in EU for dj's & I've been to many regular rock concerts here in the past, and it was definitely different from a concert, in that, from the moment we got in & the dj's were on, kids/people were dancing and doing glowstick shows to each other. Usually at concerts people are standing around or grooving/bopping to whoever's on until the main act comes on. Rockers don't really go all out and dance like they were that night. Yes there were many others standing/sitting around saving their energy or taking in the whole thing while it filled up, before Mau5 came on, but the same can be said at many clubs before the headliner comes on. I'm not sure how many of you have been to EU for a huge event w/ multiple dj's, but it was exactly the same vibe in there. Almost like (Trance)Energy or Sensations White. It definitely didn't feel like I was waiting for U2, Coldplay or even Daft Punk to get on. Maybe because neither of those headlining acts would have 4 dj's spin before they performed. All the dj's rocked it too. From M&S to MSTRKRFT.
The night started off perfectly with the sounds of Manzone & Strong playing some sick house music in their set that had everyone bouncing from the start. Rushing to get the best spots up front, people were dancing their way to the stage.
Manzone & Strong
Now despite hearing from M&S about serious issues with the monitors & echo/delays causing big time issues, Miss. Blu still managed to do a great job & had the masses jamming hard.
Sydney Blu
I've seen these guys perform at waaaay smaller venues in the past, but boy did they ever kill it that night. I wish I had recorded more, but my phone was already dying (mistake of not fully charging it before such a huge event *fail*) so I had to go and find a place where I could charge it up.
Crystal Castels
These guys were killing it and playing a great set, but I think they played some of Mau5'es tracks right before he came on? lol that's no good, but still... crowd was ready, waiting & full of energy for the Mau5 so they were going nuts dancing already to the sounds these boys were playing.
MSTRKRFT
Now, because I didn't get to fully charge my phone during Crystal Castles' set, I was barely at 35% remaining for Deadmau5es entire show, which meant that I had to pick & chose what I'd recorded wisely. I chose to limit the videos of CC & MSTRKRFT as as result :( Once the Mau5 was set to go on, the vibe went up 100x as the people who were already going nuts dug into the energy reserves and pressed the Nitrous button to go into over drive. While those who were standing around the whole time conserving energy & waiting for him started to go nuts. I knew the lighting & visuals would be amazeballs because I saw the footage a week prior of the whole production side of what goes into his A/V show, but it completely blew my expectations out of the water. In person, it was the most amazing thing I've ever seen in Toronto....ever! Someone said that the stage for WEMF 2011 was better? Well since i wasn't there I can't comment, but I had never seen anything as amazing as what they did in the Skydome for Mau5. Even as someone who's not a big fan of his music/sound, it was hard NOT to get caught up in the moment & lose yourself to the music, the vibe, the visuals, the experience. To be part of a historic moment & realizing it was breathtaking. Standing at the top of the 100level stairs after, looking down at the thousands of people dancing, singing, brought a chill down my spine & nearly a tear to my eye, because it had been over 10yrs since I've seen something that big for an EDM act in this city. Toronto truly made me proud Saturday night, and I give Joel massive respect for pulling it off & perhaps give the scene a huge kick in the ass that it needed after all these years. For the first time in a long time I'm excited for what the future of the EDM scene will be in Toronto. Maybe we'll finally get back to the status we deserve to be, since Toronto was 1 of, if not, the leader in EDM in North America back in the day. Now all we need is a proper EDM outdoor festival to take form. Soon I hope.
p.s. the last clip in this video was of his song Jaded that was released with his Faxing Berlin EP. What an AMAZING song live + with the visuals. I saw people eyes closed, hands in the air, dancing. Brought back wonderful memories.

Who said this was a concert?! LOL
I been too all the huge parties of the 90s here in Toronto. This deadmau5 night felt just like one one of those parties. Everyone was dancing. The whole feel was just like a party.
Nice vids btw.

Chem was referring to the "format" of this entertainment.
Its more of a "concert" like setting than a festival, club, warehouse, etc.
Whether it actually felt like a concert from the vibe, atmosphere and tremendous amount of people in attendance is another story but I understand where Chem is coming from when he labels it as a "concert".

I heard that general admissions tickets were not allowed on the floor!? They had to stand up in the 100 section. Is that true? That would be a total rip off.

I bought my ticket through rogers when they first came out and it gave me floor access. My two friends on the other hand just bought the regular GA tickets which did NOT include floor access... but we all have our ways and ended up on the floor.

This was the case, but sometime around 9ish they just started handing out bracelets to everyone who came through the gates who had a stub. You needed a bracelet to get on the floor.

My friend was searching for a way to get down, and couldn't. Nobody offered him a bracelet.
IMO if they paid for GA, and they ended up doing it later anyways, then it should have been done in the first place.

Transformation of the Skydome.
Pre-historic event
Thundersheep
Glad to hear this event turned out so well... we're going to have a similar event here in Vancouver with Tiesto on NYE at BC Place, so it's cool to hear that this show had a really awesome vibe as well.

As this article says...less police interference and big parties, Times have changed... And what exactly has changed since the police and municipal crackdown? Oh yes... we have a new mayor and new executive committee and a brand new municipal licensing and standards committee. That couldnt possibly have anything to do with it could it?
Naaah!!!
;)
PS i will look for the flyer i have for the skydome rave that i attended back in the early 90s :)
