Guess I was wrong about the "never" part then, but the fact still is that Skydome/CN Tower raves never happened "quite a bit" in the 90s.

As this article says...less police interference and big parties, Times have changed... And what exactly has changed since the police and municipal crackdown? Oh yes... we have a new mayor and new executive committee and a brand new municipal licensing and standards committee. That couldnt possibly have anything to do with it could it?
Naaah!!! |
Oh not this again.
Electronic music is growing everywhere around the world right now, not just Toronto. That its become so popular is why we can have a show at the Skydome now, not because Rob Ford is mayor.
And our history hasn't changed since you last posted about this stuff, the rave crackdown was still all before 2003.

what i meant by that was that we have an older crowd mostly at the parties i attend, 24-25 are probably the youngest and in the minority. Most people party responsible now but what worries me is when the second wave of younger crowd that has come from listening to deadmau5 will start attending the events that we go to. If someone accidentally dies from overdosing on something stupid because it was their first time dong then a crackdown on (afterhours) clubbing and electronic music may take place just like it did in late 90's early 00's. |
Ehh, someone OD'ed and died at a party here last year...no one bothered to construe it into anything (pre-Ford, Jaye, if you were wondering). |

There were never any raves held at the Skydome.
Kind, along with a couple of other production companies, tried to hold 'SkyHigh' at the 'dome for NYE '97/'98. What was anticipated as one of the biggest parties ever to be held in the city turned into an utter fiasco, as half of the talent listed on the flyer wasn't actually confirmed - and naturally didn't show as a result. Also didn't help that they were facing heavy competition from the considerably more organized Dose/Destiny/Better Days 'Get Down' that was being held up at the International Centre. SkyHigh ended up being moved to the National Trade Centre at the Ex, the main room was maybe 1/3 full (with the second, cavernous room nearly empty), and a large portion of the DJs didn't get paid. Rob Heydon, who ran Kind, had held some beautiful parties in the past, but he and his compadres were way, way over their heads with this one. He disappeared for a long time after that evening. |

No, you're correct - the writer of that blog knows as much about Toronto's rave history as Jay does about municipal politics. ;) |

you may think or say that it may never happen but it already did happen before. With increase in popularity of edm music there is an increase in irresponsible behavior.

this was all over the news this summer. It happened in US but if it was to happen here all hell would break lose. I find that US is slightly more lenient when it comes to partying and throwing events.. |

By Etan Vlessing, The Hollywood Reporter
Live Nation Entertainment has hired veteran Canadian electronic music producer Ryan Kruger as managing director of a new Electronic Nation Canada division.
Kruger joins Live Nation after running since 1992 Destiny Productions, where he produced over 600 concerts and club dates, mostly in Toronto.
The Message in Live Nation's Q3 Earnings: Breathe Easy
"With Destiny being a pioneer of the electronic music scene in Canada, it is personally rewarding to see the nation's largest concert promoter fully committed to the world-wide culture and excitement that is coming from electronic music today," Kruger said Monday in a statement. |

20,000 young people dancing to electronic music... unbelievable. My oh my life is cyclical. Back in 2004-2005 I didnt think electronic music would ever get this big...At least not until the year 2030 or something like that..
Maybe some those kids will end up being jaded TA members in the year 2020... |

Various venues other than clubs including these locations DID indeed happen quite a bit. In fact it was pretty much every weekend.
Skydome was once or twice
Science Centre was numerous times
CN Tower I was at two and im sure there were more
Also
-Liberty Grand
-Automotive Building
-Royal Winter Fair Building
-Airport Hangers in both Toronto island and Pearson
-International Centre
-Congress Centre
-Immeasurable numbers of Warehouses
-Ski resorts
-Centre Island Park
-Polson St
-Sound Studios
And the list goes on.....
My initial point is that the party scene is extending beyond just clubs like it used to be

The rave crackdown started with Fantino and Lastman. Lastman i give a conditional pass to because he later admitted he was wrong and practically apologized for it.
The rave crackdown then moved into the club crackdown under Miller and Vaughan.
You really think that these parties could have happened under Miller with Vaughan on the police services board and a bunch of leftards on the municipal standards committee? I can assure you that people tried and failed in the past few years. Just as politicians took away the ability to do these events, they also have the ability to allow them. It all comes down to who is in charge at city hall in the end.
If you really think that the change at city hall has nothing to do with allowing what have become unconventional spaces to have parties then you are either delusional, misinformed, or both.
Whether you like this city hall administration or not, you have to give credit where it is due. |

That much I'm aware of.
However, that did not end after the 90s (and suddenly reappear just now). The Science Centre was used for a rave as recently as 2008, there was the last Daft Punk show at that place by the airport, Tiesto at Ricoh a couple times, there's been all of Promise's warehouse parties, innumerable warehouse parties from other crews, and plenty of other miscellaneous locations from smaller promoters (I'm thinking of some events at the go kart track up at Downsview, UofT, dance studios, galleries, that theater on Spadina, etc).

Yeah. Shout outs to Carnivale and Deadmau5/his promoters for their recent ambitious events, they're the ones who deserve the credit. |

| Oh damn more CN Tower parties please. I've only been in Toronto for 5 years and never knew they had occurred but always wanted one. That would just be :eyes: :eyes: :eyes: |
