Being well-dressed has the potential to impress in almost every aspect of life. Unless you're a panhandler, then it can be quite a detriment.
Potential doesn't always mean someone important is going to notice, or that anyone at all will care, but you're not taking a chance if you strut around in rags, telling everyone they should really be judging you on the inside- because that's where it counts! Actually, I'm sorry, you are taking a chance- a chance that security will be escorting you out. |

Your attempts at baiting me are becoming pathetic. Also I'm not comparing myself to Einstein, I'm using it as an example to show that how someone dresses is completely irrelevant to their merit as a person or in whatever field they study. |

What better time than college to learn how to play the game of life: how to play the odds. Like I said, being a snazzy dresser is no surefire way to get an A (that would be retarded as hell), but if it gives you a slight edge in peoples' formulation of you, then you're really not wasting time taking those few extra minutes to put on something decent in the morning.
I'm being quite a hypocrite though, as I wear very plain clothes in general and certainly didn't dress business casual for college. It's just that sweatpants are grotty and staple for the smelly kid in class. |

Generally speaking, the less intellectual substance a field has, the more important appearance will be. There has to be something to judge by, so clothing and confident speaking style it is!
So, for example, wearing "nice" clothes is very important for success in business and marketing, but much less so in mathematics, computer science, or physics. Thus Einstein, and any number of other goofy but brilliant types in the sciences. |

I think that what he means is that in the more intellectual fields (science, math, etc.) it is less important generally speaking than a field which is more appearance oriented (business, marketing). It just so happens to be that when you think of "geniuses" they tend to be in those more intellectual fields, where image is much less important. It's not necessarily that all geniuses are sloppy dressers, just that coming up with landmark theories of mathematics or theoretical physics doesn't tend to require nice clothes. |

Notwithstanding the strong evidence that points toward Albert Einstein being actually, mildly autistic, I just don't buy that there is a correlation beyond stereotype that science-y types have to be foul and bsuiness-y types have to be preened. Obviously I see the point that appearance is far more important to fields which make use of it, but I don't see that as a valid excuse for chemistry majors to roll out of bed, hair all greasy, and show up to class in filthy clothes.
I just think it's a very clear sign of the absence of brilliance to not have a proper contingency plan. Fashion is one such thing to fall back on. You're not Einstein, so don't bank on your genius to coast you through life, because there's no such thing. |
