Except it's not that those kinds of people don't dress nice because they think they don't have to. It's because they actually don't have to, because it's not nearly as important in those fields. It's not that people in those fields have to dress poorly, it's that they don't have to dress nicely.

It's more of a circumstance thing than anything else. It's not important to dress nice when you're just working in a lab or in your own office. It is important if you're giving a speech or accepting a prize. In an academic setting, it's far more important to impress your professors with your work, than with how you dress. It's asinine to think that a professor would prefer a B- student who dresses nicely over a straight A student who lacks the same fashion sense.

Maybe it does matter to certain professors, but the fact of the matter is that it shouldn't, and in many cases, doesn't.

It's not about the clothes - it's about the effort. Doesn't take a genius to understand that.

edit: and if you don't think your professional demeanor can mean the difference between a B+ and an A, you're wrong. Especially in a large class.

You're right, the effort to dress nicely trumps the effort to excel academically in the class. It's much more impressive to dress well than to get good grades. Valid point.

Notwithstanding the strong evidence that points toward Albert Einstein being actually, mildly autistic, I just don't buy that there is a correlation beyond stereotype that science-y types have to be foul and bsuiness-y types have to be preened.

Nah, I didn't mean that scientists are always grubby and awkward. Just that it matters a lot less to their success if they happen to be that way, since they are judged almost entirely by their ideas / results rather than their looks.

Well that's certainly true.

I just recall the grotty kids in class that nobody really wanted to partner/study with. They were almost ubiquitously computer science majors. I don't have any experience at the post-graduate level, but I recall several classes that required a bulk of collaborative work, that are all the much better when the entire class isn't afraid to stand downwind of you.

Where did the correlation between dressing poorly and smelling bad start?

Do you prefer the term "olfactory fashion"? :p
srussell0018
I'm just saying that someone can be a completely clean and nice-smelling person without dressing nice :p

Still discussing this?? Wow...

Why don't you just not go out looking like a slob...

It's not offensive. Just sloppy...

Dear women, if you dress more like a man you will reduce the chance for you to get raped. If you get raped, it's your fault for not dressing more like a man. Stop playing the odds.

In an ideal world, how you dress wouldn't matter. Men wouldn't go rapetastic because a woman dress like a slut. We don't live in one though. Women still dress like sluts and it's defcon 5 and scorched ing earth if anyone tries to tell them they shouldn't.

Great analogy here, I feel good.
