Does the COR approve if I (or anyone else) occasionally like(s) a hiphop/r&b tune? (pg. 11)

The only hip-hop I can think of that I like is MC Solaar, and I have no idea what he's saying

Edit: Except that he "represents the zoom" :D

You are missing out on life. I saw Rammstein, and it was probably the best show i've ever seen. I saw Lady Gaga the week before and still managed to have fun. How do you know you don't like broccoli if you don't try it?

If you think the only things that are worth your time are things you already like, that must really suck.

I'm willing to try almost anything once (i.e. deep fried crickets - delicious!). I tried mainstream media and entertainment for 15 odd years, and it's not my thing. It's not like I actively tell people to turn the radio off or stop watching TV when I'm around; I just choose not to do it in my own time.

you guys need to calm down. some people just don't wish to actually educate themselves. laziness is a disease when it comes to discovering good music, that's why the make money and the great have multiple day jobs

Right, because anyone who doesn't like hip-hop is uneducated and "doesn't understand it". I've seen that exact same argument used by fans of happy hardcore and gabba. I push myself to my absolute limits musically. I own Venetian Snares and Autechre CDs I'm not even that fond of, simply because I wanted to see what they were about. I've done that with hip-hop and found I didn't like it for the aforementioned reasons - I feel its cultural basis is lacking. That doesn't mean I disbelieve it has merit in some cases. Srussell noted Lupe Fiasco telling kids to get out of the ghetto, which is a great example. Or others--even though I don't like it--trying to educate people politically.

What's not objective is that it's musically lacking compared to other genres. That was not levelled as a criticism now, or when this discussion started yesterday. It was simply a fact that Happymess and I used to explain our distaste for the genre. Hip-hop/rap does not try to be musical, usually. That's not the point of it. The statement is equivalent to someone saying they don't like trance because it's too fast for them. Just a reason, and trance is fast compared to many other genres. I don't like dance music with lyrics, I prefer instrumental rock, so why would I like a whole genre based on lyrics? That's all that was being advanced - not some ignorant "hip-hop is retarded, have you seen it on MTV?!"

I just saw that post that slipped in above me. I forgot about Solaar, I really like his stuff too. Like you said, I can't understand a word of what he's saying, but I like that. Voice as an instrument.

Liking hip-hop shouldn't be frowned upon. In many cases, it can be poetic, groovy, or just make you want to get crunk. People who listen exclusively to house/techno and frown when decent hip-hop comes on must suck ass.

But if you're talking Wacka Flocka Flame is the man or some , then yeah, I'll make fun of you.

lol, I read "liking hip-hop should be frowned upon." I laughed. It just sounded like such a stern denouncement. Like "You like hip-hop?!" Spank spank!
