Not that this makes a difference, but have you ever seen the Beastie Boys live man?? I think their music is mostly just ok, but they make people go crazy. Its mindless party music akin to some of the e donkey music we like. If you have the chance to go one day, do it. I'd love to read that review.:p
You can't deny their importance in streamlining the next big form of black music stolen into the mainstream for suburban cracker consumption.:p

Netro, I ing hate Beastie Boys with a passion. My girlfriend is a huge fan and gets really upset when I tell her she can't play their music while I'm in the house or car.
Which was Happymess' point in the first place - that she couldn't care less about babbling. She cares about actual music. I agreed with that. If there are lyrics, I usually don't care what they say, more so how they sound.
Well to each his own I guess. I would agree that it's the rare case that I'm really that impressed by the musical composition or how interesting a particular hip-hop beat or melody is, because honestly a lot of them are too similar to even stand out, but I guess in that particular genre I think that the lyrics have always been more important than the music. It's essentially (or was originally intended to be) poetry set to music.

No, it wasn't. The genre's adherents would have you believe that in order to increase its cultural prestige though.

Apart from any of that, I have a problem with any genre that's built almost entirely upon bragging, crassness, ignorance and glorifying violent formative years. I'm well, well aware that hip-hop and rap didn't start this way, but that's certainly what they're about now.
It didn't start that way, and although you're right that 90% of it these days is pure garbage, and that they only speak about the things you mentioned, there are definitely still artists who rap about things unrelated to the superficial elements you talked about. Lupe Fiasco is a good example. His father was a black panther, and a lot of his music actually contains a lot of criticism of the government and things like that. Other rappers that are a breath of fresh air from those kinds of things would be people like Common, Mos Def, and Talib Kweli.

That's what RAP stands for - Retards Attempting Poetry. :gsmile: :p

I'm aware of and respect that group, but I hate any music that preaches. Bob Dylan is a cunt. For me, music is about conveying and causing ineffable feelings, and pretty much nothing else.

Common was actually invited to the White House recently for his "retarded poetry." I think when you're all thinking of hip-hop, you're thinking of what they play on the radio and what is in the billboard charts. Like I said before, it's the same with any genre. If you actually have a more refined taste in music, you're not going to like the generic mass produced music that gets pushed to the top of the billboard charts by the masses who like it just because it's popular.

I agree, and although I can't relate to a Lupe Fiasco song that encourages black youth in the ghetto to go out and do something with their life, I can appreciate that even though I can't relate, there are millions who can.
