Orwell acknowledged that he had been inspired by, "We"
I have no problem with that, but "We" was based off of what Zamyatin had been seeing when F.W. Taylor created his rules for production efficiency. This is what makes "We" such a beautiful story. Zamyatin's experience oozes from every sentence. I particularly fell in love with I-330's character, though. I enjoyed D-503 and I-330's relationship so much. |

| Orwell's acknowledgement is a moot point to me, because 84 is notable for its ideas not for its writing. Take away its ideas and its nothing special. I don't blame Orwell, its more about the over inflated accolades his book received because Orwell is better known and more popular. I also agree with you about preferring We, characters and writing feel more genuine. |

It's a shame there are those naming limitations, because it would be well awesome if they could name their kid TB-303 :p |

Helen Cross - The Secrets She Keeps
What a waste. Got it at in an airport a couple years ago. The most vapid worthless junk ever.
I wanted to shoot the lead character.
To think I got the book really because I thought the cover was cool |

Ah, I forgot about JMG Le Clezio's Fever, a pile which won a Nobel prize. It's some short stories about people afflicted by various temporary conditions (i.e. a high fever) and how it makes them act. Despite the complete lack of plot, the writing itself was excellent, but really just an inferior knock-off of Patrick Süskind's. |
I tend to note an inverse relationship between artiness and plot. |

That's the reason I ever started reading Dean Koontz.
For action-filled books you don't really have to think much during reading, they're great. |

rip off is a strong word, We was very hard to digest, barely unreadable. I did not enjoy it honestly.
and 1984 is obviously all about the ideas, its an intro book to what is totalitarianism, the story is an excuse. |

What sort of question is this? He's some bloke stationed in Afghanistan (Kabul, as I recall it) and I've been here for ages - if you know about the shoes, you definitely know who I am :conf: |
