Then I hated the book so much my imagination killed him :toothless
Are you sure, though? I even remember some of the details...
I'm a big fan of misquotes by famous people.
You know someone's never read Voltaire when they mention they may not agree with someone else's opinion but would defend their right to make it public - and then quote him. I had no idea until I heard a Voltaire scholar say that, and Google agrees. A religious friend of mine used to quote a line from Plato that arguably defends his beliefs... until, that is, I gave him the heads up and we found out no Greek ever said that. There's also a very interesting quote from William James that I like very much, but that unfortunately isn't his :p |
yeh he doesn't get killed lira... the whole irony is that he's still alive, will broken at the end :p
I love misquotes too- A great one is the quote from hamlet "brevity is the soul of wit"... the character actually says "Since brevity is the soul of wit, I shall be brief", then rambles on and on and on and on, spouting off a heap of OTHER that is quoted ("neither a borrower nor a lender be" etc etc).... The character is written as a complete idiot, yet people quote what he says as if shakespeare meant him to be some kind of aphoristic genius. Idiots. :stongue:
edit: And don't get me started on misreading Nietzsche (Especially since you're one of THEM) :p |

Anyways, re: 1984, yes, I'm positive :p
He get's shot in his mind, in a day-dream, on the second-to-last page. But he's definitely still in the gin joint looking up at a picture of Big Brother when the book ends. |
I stand corrected then :) |

Wait, when/what/why? |

ugh... this book is not about our spoiled western way of life, it's about those who endured the totalitarism which once was ruling over half of humanity... it's a warning, not how *your* 1984 was supposed to be... ugh.
Winston did not die physically, but mentally he was done, the party didn't really care about killing him, it was too easy for them. Also. remember the thing about not making new martyrs? imo that was genius. |

| so if he didn't write the book then 1984 would have turned out like the book but then the book wouldn't exist or he would have wrote a book warning us about the opulent western civilization that might have been but lucky avoided by grace of our totalitarian regime. |

In the 40s, Europe was seriously under the threat of communism, for the rest i'll let you google that ... perspective, perspective! |

actually the threat was an illusion. Soviet Union fell of its own accord even though its wonderful idea to think it was Reagan. China, our arch enemy is now our biggest trading partner, which by the way is still communist. Luckily some how we avoided this threat by doing all the wrong things. Too bad literature and reality are not happy bed fellows. But lets leave that story for another time. |

If that's a joke, you're an idiot. If that was supposed to be serious, you're an even bigger idiot. |
