OK, right, as usually I'm massively exaggerating. But I really do think that "Portrait..." is a bad and uninteresting novel, while "Ulysses" is more of a ridiculous prank on literature fags than anything else.
And I also believe that the first part of "John dies at the End" is the greatest work ever. Read it already, Lira, you won't be disappointed.

Ulysses is pretty good, but it depends what you expect from it. If you think of it like an epic poem (which is what it's based on (the odyssey)) its pretty good. If you want a straight novel, you're going to be dissapointed. The last chapter is awesome too, makes up for the rest of the book!

I also like 1984- for reverse reasons. I think writing is bad, but the content is great, and I like Orwell's dystopian vision, though it turned out to be quite contrary to reality (luckily for all of us)-- The film Brazil is roughly based on it as well, and Brazil is ing awesome, which adds to the awesomeness of 1984 :p

And just for fun:

I really do cringe when ty thriller writers insist on cramming the models of guns into their noun phrases:

"Yanking his Manurhin MR-93 revolver from his shoulder holster, the captain dashed out of the office."

lol, this is great, maybe i should read one of his novels:D

The first harry potter book. Felt like a book for children, written by children. Maybe it got better after the first 80 pages, I didn’t stick around to find out.

I was only asking because the books started getting viciously dark around book 4 and 5. They were definitely not children's books anymore by 6 and 7.

I don't know why people don't like Game of Thrones. :conf:

On topic, the worst book I ever read was Wuthering Heights. Absolutely awful. :nervous:

All of Emily Bronte's writing is like that. It's just so dreary that it's depressing even reading it.
