The worst books you've ever read (pg. 2)

The Traveller by John Twelve Hawks. My mother inexplicably bought it me as a Christmas present and I felt duty bound to read it. It's a sub-Da Vinci Code knock-off (which should tell you everything, given how bad the Da Vinci Code was) and I don't think there's a single concept in the whole book that isn't a massive cliché. It's also written in an incredibly dreary realist style. Some of the dullest prose I've ever chewed through.

There's nothing exceptional about its tiness though. There's this whole body of terrible thriller novels that want to be films. I imagine if you pick any of them up at an airport you'd get a similar reading experience.

I have read worse things, but I only got a few pages in before hurling the thing away in disgust, so they don't really count.

LOL, I can hardly believe you guys actually finished some of these, from the descriptions. I have a hard enough time finishing good books. If I happen to pick up a bad one, I inevitably drop it within a few dozen pages.

I have thought about reading Twilight, though, just to experience firsthand how terrible it really is.

A Game of Thrones by George R. R. Martin

I got this book highly recommended by fans of fantasy novels and series (my preferred genre). They told me it had awesome battles and a wicked story where you'll never know if the bad guy wins or loses, or even who the bad guys are.

I can see why some people would enjoy this book (series), but it's definitely a 'love it or hate it' affair, and I hate it. I enjoy my fantasy books to have enthralling battles and dialogue that takes me to another world when I'm reading. Not 3 sentence-long battles (prefaced by a 3 chapter build-up no less), and kings calling their wife an "icy ****". I felt like I was reading about 2 blue-collar families from the city who just didn't have guns yet.

I sort of have the rule to finish everything I start. Dunno why, maybe I hate admitting that I need to quit.

Also, Da Vinci Code wasn't that bad imho. It has a lot of weaknesses, but was reasonably entertaining and well written.

@ Jay: I think Dickens is . Turgid, leaden prose, utterly bereft of plot.

The absolute worst is Oblomov.
It's a huge book about a man who sits in his apartment.

Really.

Just out of curiosity, where did you stop reading GoT?

wringer by Jerry Spinelli

Weak plot, bad, inconsistent writing, one dimensional characters, enough depravity to make De Sade squirm and so much glorified violence that would make even the worst psychopath say "That is ed up".

Woudnt recommend it to anyone.

But it's a great work of fiction!

I think its terrible even as fiction...again, one dimensional characters, weak plot, bad and inconsistent writing style not to mention the Hollywood "main character always survives even if it looks like hes dead" ending. That totally ruins it.

I decided to check my Goodreads account to see what books I rated as "1/5". This is what I found:
  • 1984: When even kinkiness in the woods becomes a political act, you know the book is just one giant rant against a specific idea without a solid theoretical background. I kept waiting for the "good part", until I noticed I was already on the last page.

  • The Republic: "Sparta defeated Athens, let's all be Spartans!". Yeah, awesome idea, Sock! Not only Socrates comes up with a Utopia, he also creates an ideal Utopier-than-thou Utopia in another realm to solve the problem of universals and whatnot.

  • Siddharta: A life changing book. The moment I finished it, I wish I could change the time I spent reading this pseudo-Buddhist climaxless bore. There's something about escaping from one's life and responsibilities that is appealing to people for some reason. I don't remember how many times he fled/ran away from his past life, and I don't remember much of the plot any more, but I'm glad my mind can't remember this or Thus spake Zarathustra.

  • Nosso Lar: Life in the Spirit World: You gringos are too ing lucky for not having to deal with this. If you know Hegel, imagine a philosophically-naive person decided to make a similar system with his prejudices and no outstanding idea whatsoever. His overcompensates his lack of insights with an annoyingly purple prose, which is the main reason why I've never finished any of his books without a strong urge to join the protagonist in the afterlife.

You should've read the warning. =D
