He's actually right in a couple of regards... soviets were never a real economic or military threat to the US... There was a definite ideological conflict, but there was never a real possibility of the US losing, and the US didn't 'beat' the soviets, they just ran out of steam...
the rest makes no sense, and its hard for me agreeing with anything IGK says, but yeah... :p |

In the 40s, Europe was seriously under the threat of communism, for the rest i'll let you google that ... perspective, perspective! |
If the rest of the world wasn't so scared of a non-existent threat then they wouldn't have signed treaties with Hitler, and given hitler a huge head-start in what would become WWII...
unless you explain what you mean by 'under threat', I don't think this statement is very accurate. If you mean they were irrationally fearful of a nonexistent threat then yeah they were 'under threat', if you mean that the commies or soviets ever wanted to, or stood a chance of overtaking the US/europe you're wrong. |

The Cuban Missile Crisis was most definitely a real military threat to the US.
Also, for a while there it seriously looked like Communism might sweep all of Europe, which would have been a very seriously problem.
Agreed we didn't beat them, they just couldn't keep up with us economically due to their rigid economic system not working well with the demands of modernization and globalization. However saying they weren't a real threat is not true. |

cuban missile crisis didn't happen randomly. It seriously is a case of the US writing history that it appears like the soviets ever INITIATED conflict. The cuban missiles were placed there as a RESPONSE to a number of missiles the US set up in allied states in order to have imediate bombing access to the USSR... They were simply trying to get some equality, after a huge shift in power caused by the US' agression/fear. The whole fear was entirely unrealistic, caused by US' political sensationalism-- Mccarthyism etc. If you look at the Russian economy and society at the time its laughable to even suggest they were a threat to the US.
read the updated second post about your second point... Again (also) that was often a cause of US initiatives to try convert every state to democracy. Once again the soviet's attempts were usually reactions to the US' imperialistic expansion of power throughout the world. They were going in and out of states installing puppet governments (often even overthrowing democratic states lulz) in order to keep people on their side.
I don't want to say they were entirely benign, but the 'threat' they posed was never real, in the way people believed it was (its like the terrorist threat of today, an EXTREMELY powerful and useful political tool based largely off misconceptions of the public), and was mostly reactionary. |

There was a CNN article a while ago about famous misquotes. Pretty funny.
Anyways, re: 1984, yes, I'm positive :p
He get's shot in his mind, in a day-dream, on the second-to-last page. But he's definitely still in the gin joint looking up at a picture of Big Brother when the book ends. |
Looking at a picture, and planning on "changing his mind" at the last possible moment, to achieve his own final, personal, victory. |

being coincidentally correct is nothing to boast about, even with me making your case for you, the competition of points tallies to what: IGK: 0.5, Lews: 2 million or so? :stongue:
