I don't remember him being shot o.o

Anyways, on the topic of 1984: I liked it, but it's definitely not the best book of all time. The ideas are great, but the actual writing is merely good. Plus it just pales in comparison with the epicness of Brave New World. I'd probably rate it at 4/5.

Also, epic smackdown on Malek :p

Thread is about worst book of all time. Not the best.

Those who say 1984 is the worst of all time obviously haven't read much and haven't even read the thread title lol.

Brave new world is excellent but a notch down from 1984's realism.

I prefer fahraneit 451 to BNW.

I know what the thread is about.

I was saying that, unlike people posting in here, I enjoyed it; however, while I enjoyed it, I didn't find it to be the best book of all time, even though many other people think that.

The problem with 1984 is that almost everybody quotes it or tries to use it in a discussion, but almost nobody actually bothers to read it.

Sometimes i just get this strong urge to hit people over the head with a hammer when they say to me "This is just like in 1984" when its not remotely like anything in there, go read the damn book you ing idiot, then youll know what is and what is ing not in the god damned book

:whip:

And i hate people that agree with those people even more!

"Well he did say its just like in 1984, i will assume he knows what hes talking about, i cant be actually bothered to read the book myseld, but from what ive heard about the it from other people that have said that this thing or other thing is just like in 1984, it does seem to be something sinister enough to be in 1984"

I've come to the conclusion that the term "Orwellian" has nothing to do with Orwell :p

Also, this is true with pretty much any important and/or quoted piece of work. How many people actually know what The Prince says about ruling? Yet people love to call others Machiavellian if it fits their idea of what Machiavellian means.

To conclude my post: everyone is stupid :p
shaw
Obviously, Machiavellian means deceitful. Duh.

Spoiler alert:

At the end of the book, when it's about to finish, he's killed after his mind was twisted because of the torture and he was already aligned with the party.

He's not actually killed. He's still at the gin joint when the book ends. He's going to be killed in the future, but it hasn't happened yet when the book ends.

Then I hated the book so much my imagination killed him :toothless

Are you sure, though? I even remember some of the details...

I'm a big fan of misquotes by famous people.

You know someone's never read Voltaire when they mention they may not agree with someone else's opinion but would defend their right to make it public - and then quote him. I had no idea until I heard a Voltaire scholar say that, and Google agrees. A religious friend of mine used to quote a line from Plato that arguably defends his beliefs... until, that is, I gave him the heads up and we found out no Greek ever said that. There's also a very interesting quote from William James that I like very much, but that unfortunately isn't his :p

There was a CNN article a while ago about famous misquotes. Pretty funny.

Anyways, re: 1984, yes, I'm positive :p

He get's shot in his mind, in a day-dream, on the second-to-last page. But he's definitely still in the gin joint looking up at a picture of Big Brother when the book ends.

I can testify to this. I grew up in 1984 and in no way did it resemble the book. Bitch got the dates wrong by a long shot.
