Admit it, you just disliked the book for linguistic reasons because of the newspeak crap. |

I actually started reading it knowing it was bad, disgusting, sick and depraved, i just didnt realise it was THAT bad, disgusting, sick and depraved.
Its like watching a porn video that was described to you as "slightly kinky", risqué perhaps but safe enough that you can watch it with your significant other, but when you go trough it you realise what you actually got was the sickest of german and japanese collaboration, full of octopus rape and eating.
Its like going to a friends place for a "bad movie night" and instead of Plan 9 from Outer Space, which is so bad its good, especially when drunk and among friends, the host puts on Battlefield Earth, in which case everybody immediately goes home and never speaks to that person again. Ever.
Its just much worse that one expects it to be, and i didnt expect it to be any good at all.

Someone needs to write a review of your review. I only remember posting some bullet points, but i could totally pad that out to a few pages if a need to do so should come up one day :D |

No, what review? :conf:
So I was right? lol, you're so ridiculously predictable sometimes. :p :haha:
Edit: I agree, btw. 1984 sucks hard. For other reasons than newspeak imho, but still. |

Actually, not authors, but their books/ideas. I believe we should be kind to one another and extremely harsh with the things we say.

So I was right? |
It's in my sig, and I gave that reason precisely because it's the one I feel the most comfortable about (as I happen to be a specialist). But, even if Orwell's knowledge of language was flawless, I'd dislike 1984 because I thought it was too one-sided. |

That works well on paper, but people's opinions are often the dearest thing to them. Attack a man's opinion and you attack him. |

I'm painfully aware of that.
I've recently drifted away from an otherwise good friend, whom I've known since high school, because for years he failed to convert me to the religion I described above in "Nosso Lar". He'd try to convince me and I'd politely turn down the invitations to join him and whatnot. He'd engage in philosophical debates with me and I'd try to make my point in as sensible a manner as possible. His insistence, however, became increasingly hostile and he started criticising me for not living the way his ideology demanded. In a way, being a complete atheist despite all his efforts were the fiercest attack to his way of living, it seemed, so I thought it would be better to just let him live his own way. |

This is where you were wrong. You turn him down politely, once. The second time he tries to convert you you slam your fist on the table and set some frim ground rules. If he still doesnt listen and tries to pull that the third time you take a page from the ancient romans book and rent a couple of lions for an hour or two. |

Also, Da Vinci Code wasn't that bad imho. It has a lot of weaknesses, but was reasonably entertaining and well written. |
I wish I could find that article where a professor of English language rips apart the intro of the Da Vinci Code almost line by line. The book is a terrible piece of writing - it was practically the text-book example of ty prose stylistics while I was at university. |

Maybe. He did try to control his proselyting urges, though. That's why the whole process must've taken from 3 to 4 years. |
