In my town the DJ hype is exploding, and all I do is mock them all because they can't produce and haven't made an effort. Seems like standing behind the decks with the booze and bitches actually KEEPS you from making your own legit tunes. Dance music culture is sad and pathetic. Needless to say I don't have many DJ friends anymore. Found the best and brightest producers with the most potential in this town and turned my back on the drunk electronic-derby trendster DJs who refuse to learn how to make music. All I want them to start doing is learn how to make music, this "I love techno" and "everyone's a DJ" bull is starting to get out of hand. If you can't produce, shut the up and get the out! Thoughts?

I don't really mind DJs, but I'm also not really into the DJ/club culture enough to notice or care. However, I do hate that many people just assume that the term DJ is somehow synonomous with musician or music producer. Being called a DJ is even worse than having some moron ask me if I "make beats." :whip:  :whip:

It's easy to sit behind the decks and drink booze and play other people's music and look good. .. time to learn how to ing make tracks though bitch. That's how I see it. If you can't make tracks and you're spinning, I'm done with you. I'll offer to show you the light though, a lot of my friends I am going to try to help out with production. I started a thread about moving to LA about 6 months ago but now I'm actually moving to SF. Gonna try to get a lot of people caught up to speed production wise before I leave. Just seems like so many of them will always *just* be DJs, which I see no meaning in anymore.

Whether producer or DJ... I don't think any of us has anything on this guy...

If you're a producer you should get out there and play your own music imo.

But, that's what DJs are for. I guess I don't see the point, unless it's just something that a producer wants to do for fun, to make some money, etc. For those who have no interest in DJing (e.g., myself), I don't see it as a necessity.

Most djs are producers. In the electronic music genre anyway. In fact i don't no any trance or techno producers that do not dj.

Well, to draw an analogy, producers are the song writers and DJ's are the performers.
Some performers write their own songs too but people tend not to notice the work of someone who sits in a room away from public view who writes songs.

I definitely think that producing takes more skill than dj'ing. For dj'ing, you need to know how to beat-match, choose tunes, interact well with the crowd, and have a lot of money for equipment. On the other hand, producing involves much more time and experience; I can't list all the things that producers have to know.
