When Lucas was casting for all the parts he was desperate to get a "real" actor as most fo the cast were relatively unknown and starting pursuing Alec Guiness for Old Ben.
Guiness read the script and thought it was utter e (and told Lucas as much) but he thought it would be a hit and knew it would make a ton of money.
So he said he would only do it if he got a % of the box office and Lucas agreed.
It made Alec Guiness a very wealthy man..... |

Guinness wanted more money and rightfully deserved it because he was well known actor as opposed to the rest of the cast not because he knew it was going to be a hit. Lucas didn't have the budget to pay him so they agreed to a %.
Guinness was wrong that it was a movie. It's certainly not Laurence of Arabia but inside its genre it's fantastic. Guinness was too old and prejudicial to understand the genius Star Wars. For a serious thespian who had a long career to be remembered for a character in a pop sci-fi movie that he did for the money is what irritated Guinness. Reminded me of an interview I saw of Sir Ian McClellan. He visibly irritated being lauded with a praise for his role in LOTR. Which he viewed as a silly inconsequential movie.
Star Wars typifies a cultural phenomenon that receives a disproportionate amount of attention and accolades. For me Star Wars has gone from an iconic sentimental favorite from my childhood to cash hungry empty franchise of bad acting and terrible dialog that is only sustained by special effects and loyal fandom. |

| The 10 year old boy in me is super excited. The old, get-off-my-lawn skeptic in me is cynical. It's going to be hard to avoid spoilers on this one, but I'll run the risk. There is no way in hell I'm dragging my ass to this on opening night to fight through the fanbois doing cos play. |

Same here, lol. I won't get a chance to see it until Christmas Eve. I'm going to have to basically unplug from social media that week to avoid spoilers :/ |
