Just came back from it. Would give it a 3/5 star rating. Some unfortunate casting mistakes, but ehhh, whatever. I do have some questions though.

Spoilers:

1)How the did the First Order become so massive in such short a time? That's ultra convenient.
2) Kylo Ren looks like a fusion of someone in Twilight and Hunger Games. Worst casting decision of the movie. They definitely should not have written in that he removed his helmet. The script should have been written to have avoided removing his helmet. Then, he might have been an "ok" villain. But now, I'm going to laugh everytime I see him.
3) Another Death Star? Really?
4) I really would have liked to see more of the Stormtrooper Captain. I feel like that character was incredibly underused. She's a great actor too, too bad.
5) My favourite part was the cantina scene though. That to me really brought the magic of the first Star Wars to life, and I'm glad we got to see another interstellar bar scene.

Anyways, yeah. I probably won't watch it again. But, hot damn, the costumes/makeup/CGI of laser battles was legit.

Can't we be past spoilers? I mean, it's been over a week. Anyone that's itching to see the flic should have by now. Well, if not, don't read my next line underneath. Ahem...

No, but really, Kylo Ren reminds me of Dark Helmet from Spaceballs, played serious. :gsmile:

Open for discussion now, don't worry about spoilers any more. I've added a warning to the thread title.

Sequel writing 101: to make your new bads seem like a legitimate threat, have them kill off a popular character from the original movie.

Mind, they still nerfed the bads by having their new mega-weapon going out like a bitch.

Also Ford has wanted Solo off'd since like, Empire or ROTJ I think. The only way they convinced him to do a new one was if he was killed off, I bet.

I saw it again last night taking my parents for xmas. They really enjoyed it, and that made me really happy. I had a really good time for a second time. I think overall it's a very solid movie, the characters are so distinct and lovable. I want to see all of them continue their stories in future movies. The overall arc though... it's so weak. There's so little narrative meat to JJ Abrams movies, this is generally what I find most fault with. He definitely has a solid eye, a knack for casting, and a vision for propulsive action; however shallow it is.

casting lol.

well let's see what htey do for the next one, maybe cast lena dunham as jabba the hut

It took a while to take kylo seriously with that casting decision.

While Kylo Ren seems like a fag bitch, I think it was topical to have him as a villain. He's the typical confused young person that wanted fame and power, and chose to do so by killing people instead of spending the time and effort to fix the world/galaxy through hard work and nobility.

I overthink Star Wars (obviously), but Ren really seems like he was based off of that type of kid that was so influenced by something like religion and ended up doing horrible things in it's name, but as he's grown may be realizing the path he chose wasn't worth it.

Hopefully with some of the loose ends tied up from the previous generation stuff, the new characters will get to do some character and world-building stuff in the next installment. They did throw some glaring plot holes at us, though.

Most of these I agree with, but some are nit picks of nit picks:

I totally agree that he lost all menace the moment the helmet came off. Clearly it was a deliberate decision to explore the angle of a flawed Darth Angst villain and I suppose it's more complex than a straight up badass, but it left the film without a genuinely threatening bad guy.
