Ok what the . It was an alright movie to watch, however after thinking about it some more it seriously sucked.
It overall went nowhere, the characters were crap and acted like they were in a superhero movie, and it was boring and predictable. This is by far the worst star wars movie. I honestly really wish they got bioware to write the new star wars movies. The writing and story in SWTOR is way way better than this crap.
Some massive flaws:
-It took me about 1.5 hours to work out what the heck was going on. So there's a new order which is the remnants of the empire and there's also a republic, but is this a new republic or something based on the old one? It's not really explained.
-How much of the galaxy is owned by the new order vs the republic? If the resistance are against the new order then how connected to the republic is the resistance? I don't think it was explained.
-Ok so, sure some jedi are stronger than others, but why the are two totally untrained people able to take on a sith lord with extensive training? This seriously ruined the movie. It made it so that battles felt like they were based on how the plot wants things to go and not at all based on the strength of either side
-The sith lord stopped being dark as soon as he took his helmet off... and it has nothing to do with the helmet. The character just became weak and stupid after that point, an artifact of stupid disney writing no doubt
-So, they took out several republic planets... and then the only thing they show from the new republic is the faces of a few people getting scared. What a massive cop out and dumbing down of the series.
-There are now 3 star wars movies about blowing up a death star or equivalent, did they really need another one? It wasn't overdone the first two times but this time it definitely was.
-While at least the stormtroopers shoot properly this time, the tactics displayed in the movie were absolutely nonsensical otherwise, oh yeh we just happened to find this random weak spot etc. It's might've been almost alright if it hadn't of been done before in previous movies but it's quite cliche now.

As I suggested, the look, feel and sound of the universe is perhaps the biggest source of that magic |
Visually the movie was fine, but in terms of how the characters in the universe acts and how politics etc works in it they totally ruined it

1)How the did the First Order become so massive in such short a time? That's ultra convenient.

I'm not that familiar with EU canon, but based on what we've seen in the movies it's quite possible they arose from a Spanish Civil War type scenario. I.E. They were a state formed by a few generals in the army that rapidly took control of a large area. |

yeah, hard not to agree with almost all of those.

I totally agree that he lost all menace the moment the helmet came off. Clearly it was a deliberate decision to explore the angle of a flawed Darth Angst villain and I suppose it's more complex than a straight up badass, but it left the film without a genuinely threatening bad guy. |
i wonder if ren is what luke might haved looked like as a sith. he too was a whiney angsty faggot. and since they copied just about everything else from the OT, it wouldn't surprise me! |

I sure did, was getting hyped up when you see him place his hand on R2D2. Also all the Knights of Ren standing together in that dark, rainy setting with lightsaber drawn looked pretty badass...only to find out both those things were fragments of Rey's past I'm assuming?
I seen a lot of little things I didn't like during the movie, but then again your average Stars Wars fan parallels the likes of douchey wine critic.
My main gripes would probably be Kylo Ren's character choices. I thought his voice in the opening scene sounded like a ty drive-thru speaker but then actually sounded kinda cool later on with his character building a nice mystique but when the helmet comes off, all that god-like mysticism is gone and feels like a pissy whiner.
As a fan of the EU books, I thought Anakin Solo would have been a better name for Kylo. In the books there are three Solo children(Jaina,Jacen,Anakin) Jacen being the one that falls to dark side and also kill Luke's wife and almost his son Ben Skywalker but seeing how Kylo idolizes his grandfather, the Anakin name would convey more empathy of his need to measure up to Anakin Skywalker/Vader, why he draws spiritual power from Vader's helmet, and the angst.
I also thought Rey would turn out be Jaina Solo who eventually kills her brother Jacen/Darth Caedus, but I think she might end up being a Skywalker or one of his last surviving students put in hiding as that cryptic scene where she finds the lightsaber felt like repressed memories.

Sequel writing 101: to make your new bads seem like a legitimate threat, have them kill off a popular character from the original movie. |
That what I thought too, but Ford actually wanted Han to die in ROTJ. To me it would justified going by the EU, that for a Sith to be obtain the Darth title and mastery, must go though the Trial of Sacrfice, which tasks them to kill who they love most/family to prove their dedication.
I think episode 8 might be like a longer version of when Luke trains with Yoda and you get backstory on Vader, but Luke will be the one training "A New Hope" and maybe see Kylo training as well, with Snoke giving him his title and new name and Knights of Ren...more backstory on both sides.
I actually think Kylo realizes that Rey is stronger than him when he tells her she needs a teacher because he really couldn't control her much after trying to read her mind which totally provokes or "awakens" her true abilities. |

That's why it was probably the least surprising death I've ever seen. You knew someone had to die, and Ford going out was the most obvious option given his history with the character.
Of course, I'm sure it caught my 12 year old nephew totally off guard. Damn my aging and gaining of too much insider knowledge. :toothless |

Came back from the theater. Well aside all the various nods and similarities with A New Hope I was certainly well entertained. Not the most mindblowing of plot but I did take a fast liking to the new heroes.
And hearing everyone in that theater cheer once Han Solo and Chewie appeared in the flick, that was priceless. |

Really? They're still doing that? Man, maybe I lucked out with a reasonable audience when I saw it. then again, it was half-empty, and a late showing on Xmas Eve. |

There were 3 or 4 moments of clapping when I saw it on a rainy Monday night with the theater perhaps 35% full. I cringed a little, but hey...fanbois gotta represent, yo. |

Yes, but I went to see it at an IMAX 3D theater in the Bay Area, with the theater about 75% full. Earliest day I could reserve seats. Damn that screen made my neck sore. |

| I've never been to a single movie where anyone in the audience clapped or cheered :conf: |

| I must admit, I cheered when the familiar score came on and I saw the "A long time ago in a galaxy far, far away...." crawl. Lol. |

I just sat there with a big stupid grin on my face, lol. Same when Han and Chewie turned up. |

I've been to a couple where an audience gave respectable claps, though almost always on premier day (Avengers movies, Hobbit movies (yes)). Not so much cheers, but I can certainly see it happening. Hell, we all have seen it happen, in those clips of theatre audiences.
That's always within the first weekend though, when anticipation and enthusiasm is at critical mass. After a week's passed, I'd imagine the only people going are repeat viewers (with no need to cheer again), and those who waited out the gong showings (*cough*). |
