You come across as nothing more than an old man who denounces his traditions in lieu of modern mediocrity in a desperate attempt to seem like he's still up to date yet is really nothing more than a phony, insecure, bitter pseudo-hipster. A very quick resolve would be for you to answer my questions. I can't tell if you're 15 or 40 to be honest. Denounces traditions? Lol I still listen to dance music.

So you're 24 and acting like you've already been there and done that and you're past it all now, telling a guy you're going to beat him up because he's "outdated", spitting vitriol left and right because a few of us like trance, saying people are stupid for not listening to modern music...then you go and say you've got an 'old' taste in music. |

I've been going out since I was 17, I was listening to all your classic trance records on my ipod while i was sitting in my 6th grade classroom. I've gone to all the big clubs in NYC, world renowned clubs, I've gone to huge but seriously illegal parties that would give legendary 90's raves a run for their money, multiple times, sometimes staying there for close to a full day. I've been to festivals in both Americas, some before I could even drink. I don't think I've seen it all, but I think I got the gist.
When did I say I was gonna beat anyone up for being outdated? Because I like old music I can't like new music and know about it? This is how your idiotic binary brain works. Since you're not gonna answer any questions, I'm just gonna watch you crash and burn now.
edit: Not to mention that I still go out regularly. I'm sure you get a lot of talent flying through Minnesota though, keeping that mind fresh enough to tell people what works and doesn't on the dancefloor.

Wow, this thread delivers.
I'll give my two cents (for some reason I must like a bit of S&M) as I'm probably one of the few people who were clubbing in 1995 (UK and my first trip to ibiza), then started DJ'in 1996 had my peak of clubbing days in 1997-2000, then moved to LA in to see the fledgling electronic music movement gather pace then die, then to Canada for 2001 where there was an incredibly interesting mix of all dance music genres, then back to the UK until 2007 when i moved to the states.
intermingled with this was many trips to Switzerland and Germany.
Given the debacle that unfolded here, I'd probably say I'm uniquely qualified to give a record, albeit anecdotal, as both a punter and aspiring DJ.
Nothing beat the 90's. I don't really give a what people try to say about now, and it's not Dove shaped notalgia, it was the fact you had people putting out albums, yes like BT, Leftfield, Sasha/Digs,MWNN, Oakenfold, nick breacegirdle, Nick Warren, Way Out West, Red Jerry, etc that were incredible musicianship and production. For instance BT and Chicane would spend years making an album. That just simply doesn't happen these days.
As for the localization or=f the scene, you can't really deny certain artists were atop of many scenes. By may have not been huge in Germany but he was in Ibiza as he was in London as he was in his native city of LA.
Of course, some things translate as well; I still own a lot that german hard trance and you could still get it in London and just like UK dance music, some of it was good and some of it was terrible, but the striking thing was the abundance. I'd have a rough time trying to cut my "good" pile of records down to 10 in a single visit because I had 30 odd great track in front of me out of 200 new releases that week but couldn't afford it.
I have no ing idea though why people are posting up fathless tracks; 1995 in Ibiza was the year of insomnia and although people would dance to it, it was the equivalent of a Bruno Mars track in a club. They were ing cheesey as hell but made it because they were a dance music group that you could put on stage so were TV friendly.
There is a cyclical thing with dance music and I must admit the years of 2000 to late 2004 were dark days of dance music; some of the most god awful boring prog form the likes of Pole folder etc. tracks that literally did nothing for 8 minutes.
2005 started to get fun; some interesting funky prog started rising and the McProg (and all yall, I still love a little McP), but it was short lived, nothing like the renaissance period of the previous decade, and fizzled out to the point I virtually gave up on dance music. Was still fun in Ibiza but given the commercialization of the scene, it was a pale comparison. Then moved back to the states in 2007.
Oh my ing god.
it was like the 90's all over again. People just discovering dance music like the mid 90's, same enthusiasm, same vigor. Some really ing great prog and trance were coming out and honestly, I got a second bite of the clubbing cherry all over again. People like Carl Cox and Sve Vath who had evolved their hard tribal and techno roots in to progressive sounds, and it tasted good. It was also nice to see US homegrown talent, guys like Marcus Wyatt, Doc Martin and Keri Chandler who had been diligently pugging away at their deep house sound, finally got the limelight and recognition they deserved.
I would say by about the time 2011 rolled around the lustre was wearing off as this was right as big business started getting right up in US clubland. and it all went to . Same as in the UK and ibiza, noobs and kids started just going to be in it and really had no definition of music. Coachella. Shows in Central Park. Places to tag yourself #iloveEDM.
2015 wasn't bad but really it was more interesting as a seed state; you;re starting to see the pull away from commercialization and a lot more global, unknown DJ's from South America and eastern Europe crystallize their sound to prominence. I will say it wasn't a good year for the guard of yesteryear.
We'll see where it goes but I don't think it's german trance :p |
