OMFG!!!!
Arnhem/Breda | A thousand promoters, DJ’s, VIP’s, journalists and friends from all over the world are on the guestlist. The registration by 17 (!) cameras will be released worldwide on a dvd and on 2 regular tv-movies. And Tiësto in spite of all this consternation still stays Tijs.
After all the prices Tiësto won last year he’s back on track. The overwhelming attention of the media, the hysterical fans, his presence at yet another award event, it didn’t take the trance king from Breda out of him.
When the DJ comes out of a brand new Audi Cabrio on the parking place at the Gelredome, he looks relaxed. With a short white jacket on his shoulders and sunglasses on he walks towards the stadium. In the lobby there are 2 posters hanging on the window: Paul McCartney with his ‘Back To The World Tour’ (not sold out) and ‘Tiësto Solo’ (sold out for weeks)
What does the Gelredome concert mean to him? Verwest: “I see it as the biggest moment in my career so far. I started in the Spock in Breda, spinning for 150 people and now here I am spinning for 25.000 people. Who would’ve thought that? Together with ID&T we came up with the idea to perform in a football stadium. At first I thought it’s a good idea, but it’ll never work. I didn’t feel like DJ’ing for a half empty stadium.”
“ID&T did some research last year at some big dance events where I was one of the many DJ’s. And it came out lots of people came there only to see me. According to ID&T not only the fact my name as a DJ has become big because of my mix albums and artist album ‘In My Memory’, but also because I did remixes of songs done by people like Moby and Faithless. That helped to make my name as DJ even more known.”
Tijs Verwest tells us he’s been busy for months preparing the special concert. “It’s a huge undertaking, but luckily ID&T does the organisation of the party. They’re from the dance scene and know exactly what to do to make a succes of such a big event. Myself, I made many new recordings. I have 2 flightcases with the regular records. People expect me to play the hits, but besides that the fans will hear a lot of new material.”
”I have used the last few (foreign) gigs to try out many new tracks. E.g. the people in Greece are very open-minded. That’s perfect for me to experiment. Preparing for the Gelredome concert is the same as preparing for a marathon. With very few gigs the last three months I got myself some rest that got me all fit and sharp again. Last year I kinda lost that.”
The deejay explains us he really had to accustom himself to all the sudden attention he got. “For years I said ‘I’m glad I’m not Marco Borsato (a famous dutch singer)’. Now the same thing happened to me. I can’t come outside of the door or immediately I’m DJ Tiësto. I’m only the old Tijs with my friends and family. It’s kinda hard. When I’m with friends going to a pub, there’s a painfull silence right away. Sometimes even panic. Next thing everybody comes to you and wants to take a picture of you. I feel honored, but I can’t have a nice evening out. I’m not doing that anymore. I stay at home most of the time.”
Did all these prices and attention encourage his creativity? “Not at all”, he says. “I couldn’t do anything anymore. I lost my inspiration. I couldn’t listen to any new records. Didn’t have any time to visit the studio. After a half year things got for the worst. I seldom get to hear criticism after my gigs. Everybody loves it, but I was no longer satisfied. I want to develop constantly. If I can’t do that because of my busy schedule or whatever reason, then I’ll have to make a turn. I had to take some time off and reject lots of offers. Since the beginning of january I have my hands free again. I took a holiday and went to South Africa. Since then I’m working in the studio on new productions and only DJ in the weekends to not lose my connection with the dancefloor. I’ve got my self-confidence back.”
But why did he suddenly came up with a double album? “Until now I released, besides my solo album with my own productions, two different kind of mix-cd’s. The chilled ‘In Search Of Sunrise’ series and the more danceable ‘Magik’ series. My double cd ‘Nyana’ got the best of both worlds. In the Gelredome I’ll spin a lot of these tracks. From 10 am that evening you’ll hear a compilation cd with my favourite chill-out records. At 11 am I’ll start DJ’ing. I won’t tell you everything, but it’s better to be in before midnight because of the opening.”
And what happened to the symphony orchestra? “That news never should’ve come out. I was thinking about the idea to play with a classical orchestra in the Gelredome. I thought that would be great. Trance has a lot of symphonic influences. We were already negotiating, but it didn’t go through because of the enormous costs. We had to arrange hotels for every musician. Alltogether it would’ve costed about €200.000. And musicians also aren’t allowed to play after 11 am. That’s where we start.”
”I really regret it. But if all worked out well it would’ve been an enormous job. Classical musicians have a different sense of rhythm. I once tried something with an opera singer. I’m not gonna say who, but it was hopeless. Those musicians don’t understand the timing of the bassdrum. They have a specific timing and are always too early or too late.”
What after the Gelredome? “Don’t know. If it’s a succes, maybe we could do this abroad. I notice a lot of interest. Everywhere I come people are asking for the Gelredome concert. In the dance scene in Miami, New York and London it’s the talk of the day. There will be promoters, organizers, DJ’s and journalists from all over the world. There will be about a thousand of these people in the VIP area. People are curious how it will go because of the current crisis in the music industry. There’s been a lot of criticism on dance the past time. Everything would sound the same and got commercialized. That’s true for a bit, but people forget there’s still a lot of good music left. Also record companies are quitting because of free copying and downloading. That may all be true, but I want to let people see with the Gelredome concert that dance is still alive. I’m gonna hearten the dance scene.” |

| Hab ich das jetzt also richtig verstanden, dass es kein Orchester gibt und von 10-11 nur Chill-Out läuft?? |

200 Euro... lol! |

Hi there! :)
FAO Trancegiant>
I sent you a PM about the meeting. :) |

| TranceGiant |
Yup, just read it. I'll send you one back after I wrote down what you proposed concerning the meeting:

(I hope I wrote that right ;) )
Was denkt ihr? |
