Taxes on personal income and business investment are the most regressive.

aha then why the incessant whining about why Chretian didn't get rid of it?

Now last time I checked I thought conservatives are suppose to reduce taxes?!

Believe what you want to believe people, statistics and quotes can be made and found to prove any debate.

Love it or hate it, the GST actually WAS a tax reduction in some senses. Prior to the GST, there was a Federal Manufacturer's Sales Tax on many goods at around 13% which was hidden in the ticket price of items. In some cases, the GST replaced other hidden taxes such as a communications tax on cable bills and telephone bills which was around 20%!

Any basic taxation policy course will teach you that a more "fair" and "efficient" tax is one that is levied on a broader base of goods / services at a lower percentage rate and is transparent (that is, you can see you are paying the tax, it is not hidden in the price). This is exactly what the GST accomplished. Several other jurisdictions have implemented similiar Value Added Taxes (VATs) including the European Union and Australia.

it's all politics...

...Chretien himself played politics by pledging to get rid of it.

Meanwhile, the GST is the most profitable tax for the federal government... the government sucks the taxpayer's teat dry

If the Conservatives do that, you can vote them out.

When judges make policy decisions, as with gay marriage, there's no recourse.

Judges are appointed by the PM, and Liberals generally appoint Liberal judges. So the argument that they're non-political is nonsense.

We need MORE politicalization --> it's called democracy.

PS. The assumptions in the rest of your post are bunk.

Are you serious??

So then social issues such as human rights should be politicized? Freedom of speech, censorship, freedom of self expression, the right to have power over ones own body?

Say some party thinks that Canada doesnt need Human rights law, this party also enjoys a majority, Say it has 110 seats out of the 308 in parliament all the rest of the paries have less. In actuality this party represents very few Canadians. In this hypothetical scenario the party can pretty much do whatever it wants, including changing the constitution? This isnt a scare tactic, think about the reality of it.

Judges are suppose to interpret the law, that is what they do. Parliament makes the laws. BUT the whole point of making a constitution is, is that it is the LAW OF LAWS. The constitution isnt suppose to be changed easily, thats the point of the constitution. When you try to make an amendment to the constitution it is a huge endeavor that needs the majority of the entire parliament, as well as agreement from all the provinces. Lets not go and muddle with the very nature of our laws.

well if conservatives win, they can appoint conservative judges.. happy?

and the rest? how is it bunk, please do explain yourself.

155 seats are needed to form a majority. 110 seats is a very small minority.

There are 5 amending formulae. The most important one requires a majority of Canadians and a majority of the provinces. In actual fact, it's impossible to amend the Canadian Constitution. Pierre Trudeau was the single worst PM in Canadian history.

1) The Charter and Repatriation has been a legal and political disaster.

2) Terrible fiscal policies; huge deficits and skyrocketing debt (Mulroney was just as bad in this area BTW).

3) The Canadian dollar has never recovered.

4) He was a communist that passed secrets to Cuba, China and possibly the USSR.

etc. etc.
