Why question these things? Why not let yourself believe as you want to and let it be content within itself?
I believe I was in love. Technically, I might not have been, but I believe I was, and that makes me happy. Why not fool myself? |

Because I want to know what it really is. I'm tired of being fooled. |

If you think you loved, let yourself believe it. What can it hurt? |

The difference is in its genesis: instead of being based on criteria that you have assimilated from society, it is your own criteria which are met and you are thus inspired to love by. In that way, and only that way, is the love truly yours. |
Great post Arb :) Just one thing that puzzles me: how do we seperate our own criteria from the ones society impose on us? Aren't these in fact one and the same? |

Well optimally we would never mix the two to begin with, we would have two seperate concepts of "society's ideal" and "my ideal," which wouldn't necessarily have anything to do with each other, even though we were aware of both. Unfortunately most of us begin being socialized at the same time we are developing our individual identity, so the two processes tend to influence each other irrevocably.
Now in almost all people some or all of their criteria are the ones they have assimilated from society. Our own criteria would be those we come to as a result of our own thinking (rational or irrational) about what we value and why we value it, and they may be similar or identical to popular ideas (in which case it's difficult if not impossible to be certain where they came from) or they may be different than popular ideas. |

Ideally though...
We don't live in ideals. We live in a world with many elements that could use more reasoning and ideals, but are doomed to never make use of them. It's just how things turn out - our own [un]doing, yet no individual responsibility. All that matters is that you retain your sense of integrity - no matter how blinded it is, some vestige of self-respect and individuality must be established to and by yourself and only for yourself. Only this realization of one's own washed-out morality despite the potential to change can ever lead to the individual's freedom from society's shackles - it's a stark contrast to the assumed passion of the past, but our world is constantly changing, and so should we...optimally. :p
Only when you have realized what you are can you realize who you are. If you ever expect to truly love another person - you must have established to yourself some semblance of empirical sentience. |
