Van Nguyen - Hang or not to hang?

No doubt you all know the story.

Do you reckon he should hang or not?

And furthermore, what gives Australian's the right to interfere with anouther countries justice system? Should we not accept their decisions and values? And would we care if it wasn't an Australian? To answer that one, it is definitely no as there have been hundreds of people executed in Singapore before for drug cases and no one's given a damn, why do we only get uptight now its an Australian?
jizza
no he should not be hung. no-one deserves to be hung.
Trance Nutter
I (mostly) agree, and capital punishment is outlawed here in Australia.

However mustn't we respect the decisions, values and judgements of other countries uncorrupt judicial systems? Consider the situation reversed, and Singapore was trying to interfer with our judicial system, they would be told in no uncertain terms to piss off by the vast majority of the population.

And why is it only a problem when its an Australian?

The last Australian that was hung was Ned Kelly...
I feel sorry for his mum and family, no one should be going through what his family is going through!

yeh but in saying that, no one should take 402 grams of heroin into a country that have no tollerance for drug traffickers, in saying that no i dont think he should be hung, he should serve his jail term in that prison, and as for the prisoner exchange program, if schapelle cant get one neither should this young guy

Not quite correct Virginia ;)

Ronald Ryan was hanged in 1967, quite a number of years after Ned Kelly which was in 1880 ;)

but what if they're WELL hung?

*boom tish!*

...

man another one, seriously the dude did some stupid in a foreign country knowing full well what the g-o was so now he has to suffer the consequences. sure a hanging is harsh, and i'm not in full favour of capital punishment but we didn't write the laws in singapore.

as for australia's interference, too little too late.

how would howard like it if some other nation interfered in every little court decision that was made in his own backyard?

well they shouldn't however their argument for doing so is that there is a mutual benefit for both nations if the guy stays alive ie. he can potentially lead them to the bigger fish.

Not hang but i simply do not believe in Capital Punishment. There are several cases in the US where people were killed who because of dna etc were later proven to be innocent. Bit hard to make them undead when we make a mistake.

But when we travel we play by other peoples rules so us jumping down about it isnt going to help.

If its true he was doing it to raise money for his brothers legal bills then i feel even greater sorrow for him. People have been saved with only minutes before death so i hope that happens in this case.
