took every single meterology course Univ. of Florida has to offer... all 6 of them... ha.. and got the degree in Geography...

ive always wanted to work for the NHC in Miami or the one of the weather stations ie. Weather channel or CNN or one of the variety in Atlanta...

Sadly the NHC is the most difficult to land. Besides Max Mayfield... there are only 6 other MET's that work there.

isn't that sad when normal terms or acronyms are now being replaced by meteorological stuff?

we were doing stuff last year with the Planetary Boundary Layer [PBL], and we kept calling it the Peanut Butter Layer [PBL].

funniest quote ever,

"Will, you know what PVA stands for right?"
"What?"
"Well, the P is the same....the V is what you think it is....and A is for ACTION!"
"Ben, that means that PVA really does cause upward motion!"

QPF = Quarter Pounder w/ Fries right?

I was going to minor in geography, but ISU cancelled that program the year before i started :(

Just out of curiosity, have you ever been on assignment with AF folks before?

I always hear the AF side of that scenario, but never the Army side...would be neat to hear a different perspective

Well, since i'm taking the AFROTC route, i've already done Field Training.

But i'm getting stationed at Barksdale AFB in Shreveport, Louisiana. i'll be going down there sometime between May and August [i won't find out for sure until March or April].

my three top choices were alaska, hawaii, and germany. but barksdale was my #5, so i at least got something on my dream sheet [form 53], and i'm getting out of the midwest, and travelling to places i've never been before. which is sweet.

and Barksdale is the hub that forecasts for tornado alley. sweet!!!

Germany is beautiful. My bro was stationed at Ramstein (sp?). The country and beer were beyond wonderful.

Ok, so Hoo!Rah! for mention of the AF!!

and ripped bag, congrats on taking that route. I'm assuming you are enlisting? or are enlisted? or are you getting your commission too? The tech-schooling that I will be taking is only a 14 week course [9am to 5pm 5 days a week], but thats because i'll already have my meteorology degree [a bachelor of science, not a bachelor of arts].

The AF is in demand for meteorologists....but at a different level. there's a huge influx of new officers [LTs] because there was such a +high+ demand in the previous years. but really, they're still short in the higher ranks (Major + ) .

in regards to the regular "weatherman".....no one's perfect.

Lawyers make mistakes and it causes money damages, or possibly sending the wrong person to jail/death row.
Doctors can mess up and end people's lives or leave them injured.
Police can mess up and seriously injur an innocent person.
Fireman just may not get there in time to save people's lives.

Every profession out there...people can just make mistakes, or problems arise or anything of that nature. So when a weatherman makes a wrong forecast....and it ends up being 40 degrees instead of 32....has your life really been damaged or harmed that much?

On the other hand, sometimes if a meteorologists' forecast is wrong....people's lives can be affected. But that is just like any other profession out there.

As far as money goes, the military is one of the lowest paid group of meteorologists. As a 2nd Lt, when i graduate, i will make around $40k a year. It takes an 0-7 or higher for pay grades to be even remotely close to 100k plus. all of this is public knowledge, you can google it if you want.

just some thoughts.

Was Army 02-05, switched to AF Sept of this year, going to ISU (Indiana) spring 07 for ROTC if I don't get accepted to any of the Academies which I'm applying to right now.

Is anyone going to Annual AMS in Atlanta this year? Ill be there all ten days. Presenting for IIPS on Wednesday at 11:15am or something. Last one before lunch. Come say hi if youre there!

Link to abstract and manuscript.

And this all reminds me that I should check out ATL's local events for that week...

When I was Army we worked Joint Forces, but I was mainly with Marines. What do you want to know?
