I walked through the area this morning - god, it doesn't really hit you the same way until you walk through. it was cold and drizzling with rain and everyone was just utterly depressed and sad. I had to hold back tears just walking through...I didn't even stop to read all of the notes left with flowers outside of foot locker.

I could only imagine how hard it is on her mother and older sister who were both with her when this happend. One usually goes through a very intense self-blaming stage eg. why her..why not me?, why did we have to go? why did I convince her to come?(in the event that she didn't want to), why didn't I push her down?, etc...

I had one of my best friends die in my arms when I was only 15 because of random violence and fkn s like these who think they're cool. You really do lose your innocence when like that happens, especially at the age I was, but if it was hard on me (he was a friend) I could imagine how hard it must be for it to happen to one's child or sister. GOD bless her and her family, and I hope this was the last straw and helps these politicians grow some balls and change this sentencing/charges BS that should've been changed ages ago. :whip:

As for now, all gun related charges and suspects should be held without bail and time spent during trial processing should not be applied towards total jailt time spent.

The good die young. R.I.P.

GOod old CNN.

WHy dont they look in their own backyard before warning people against going to toronto?

This is the same network that showed loops of video footage from china while they talked about the Toronto SARS outbreak. These are also the same clowns that went on and on about mad cow in Canada yet barely mentioned it when the US had it's own mad cow cases.

I stopped watching cnn (and other american networks) long ago. The last great american news reporter was peter jennings, and he was canadian.

If youre South American, then you would know that Chileans have the reputation as being the worlds best thieves. We still everything, from your car, your coat, and even your wife! :p

Based on what I heard from friends, alot of who are latino, some from Chile & my brother who has been to Chile 4 times, Chile is one of the safest countries in Latin America, and that downtown Santiago is far safer than many U.S. inner cities. My friends grandparents in Santiago have never been robbed, and they are always walking everywhere. My brother & his wife have never felt threatened there. I will be in Chile for New Years next year. Alot of Bolivians say Chile stole their coast, but my personal opinion is Chile fairly won that in a long ago war, and that would be like Mexico accusing the U.S. of stealing Texas.

I do know someone who went to Argentina who "dressed poor" to fit in & not get robbed. He said that there, if you have money, you really don't want to attract attention. However the crime in Argentina is different, more because many people there really poor & desperate, and jobs are few; and less because of anyone trying to be gangster thugs.

well what can you expect when they have the US audience that they do. an audience whose entire knowledge of anything outside their own town stems from snippits they see on the news. I just got a call back from a marketer in Florida looking to chat with someone in our office about tourism in toronto. First question out of his mouth "have you seen any polar bears lately?". Then he asked "Are you afraid to go outside in Toronto these days?". SIGH.

it's not the "crackheads" and shelter dwellers who are the problem...they are an eyesore and annoyance at worst.

It's the organized gangs and drug dealers who are shooting each other (and now bystanders as well)...many of whom don't even live downtown themselves, they just come down to "do business".

I think they are both part of the problem because those drug dealers wouldn't be there if all those "crackheads" weren't buying crack, meth, PCP & heroin, and often robbing people to support their habit. Also most organized gangs support themselves by smuggling counterfit firearms, drugs, money laundering & prostitution; and unfortunately people use their services. Also Crack Addicts are definately a big cause in increases of crime because crack addicts have no respect for themselves, anyone else, or society. Several months ago I read an article about the huge Crack problem along with the rapid increase in crime in Yellowknife. That was probably the last place, I would have ever thought of having a crack problem. Also I heard that Stratford, Ontario is now a "meth den
and that crime is up there as well. Also last summer while visiting, it didn't take long to realize that Leamington, Ontario has a severe drug problem, and has alot of wasted lives, and a high rate of theft.

The Canadian government needs to crack down on crime. With the decriminalizing of weed possession, I thought that would lead to violent criminals getting far longer jail sentences with all the extra space in jail. I also think that certain criminals, such as Karla Homolka & the shooters in Toronto should get the death penelty. When I used to live near Windsor I had a neighbour who had illegal firearms, threatened people with them, got several slaps on the wrist by the OPP, & ended up on the front page of the Windsor Star for a double homicide he committed on St. Josephs Island. Those murders should have never happened because HE SHOULD HAVE BEEN IN JAIL, at least for all the times the police went to that house for domestic violence.
Based on many observations living in that area, crime often does pay, because people way too often get away with it, and it seems that the police are more worried about pulling over people for speeding than solving real crime. I am really not suprised by the recent increses in violent crime in Canada.

I never had any problems when i lived there and the other 4 times i was there. That said, you are definately much more aware of your surroundings when in argentina. Crime is an issue there moreso than here. But if you are smart and dont attract too much attention you are usually fine. Id be more worried about the drivers there LOL. But in Argentina you do hear of the occassional shootout like what we witnessed here. Part of the reason i made my "third world" comment.
