just to take this on a bit, have got hold of some of the latest ipool releases, and guess what, a kompresser vs YDR remix of the first rebirth - really tasteful. And also a green martian remix of Armandi - Philtre, along with a return of 'blue velvet' this is why I respect the guy, cos he can put out such diversity, quality & good listening. |
sounds nice. really looking forward to that Blue Velvet thingie. Even though I don't have high hopes for the new remixes of First Rebirth i'm still gonna check them out.
I really liked Airwaves remix of it from a couple of years ago. Will be interesting if he can top that one with his new Antidote remix |

don't rate it from a first listen. the solid slide one is nice however. Joof's is the one im anticipating most, after what he did to mahadeva and cafe del mar |

Decide for yourself. |
Sounds quite similar indeed, and not only with the 93 returning mix even but also with the original mix. I wouldn't call it a ripoff, but he was clearly - conciously or unconciously - inspired by Nothing.
But anyway, my thoughts on the album and the thread as a whole, for that matter ;)
So far I've listenend to discs 1 and 2, and I agree with the position that it would have been better if Lolo had picked the best tracks off of discs 1 and 2 and put them together on one disc. And if he had done so, this album would have undoubtably been fantastic! Cause let's face it: these 2 disc feature some amazing and magnificent tunes, worthy of tons of praise! Sunday Break, Terra Firma, Higher & Higher (reminiscent of his older trademark Airwave sound), People Just Don't Care (So much emotion in this track, few producers can pull that off these days), and my absolute favourite so far, Appletonz (Seriously, Lolo should make more prog breaks, cause he's easily up to par with the best producers in the genre!). He could have easily filled 1 disc with a wide variety of killer tunes, that probably wouldn't have triggered the disappointment that some of you here feel. And if I'm honest, I'm a bit disappointed as well. I've also been a big fan of Laurent since I first got into trance around 1997, and together with M.I.K.E. he's always been somewhat of a hero for me, always succeeding in giving me goosebumps and musical satisfaction with nearly every production they delivered. My style has changed over the years, but those 2 guys still managed to capture my attention with their tracks and they kept on giving me the same exctatic feeling when listening to their tracks. And I've also noticed that they've both somewhat changed their style and sounds, and are heading in a different musical direction than the one they used to follow. For M.I.K.E., it's a more techy and dark direction, for Lvee it's a more deep yet fluffy and dreamy direction, away from the heavy bass driven tracks that were so typically his. And I'll be the first one to say that I'm gonna miss tracks like Innerspace, Escape From Nowhere or Save Me. But on the other hand, this cd covers only the Airwave guise. The fact that the Airwave sound has moved on doesn't necessarily mean that he will cease making Planisphere, Meridian or Velvet Girl tracks in the same vein as they used to be.
Because Airwave is sort of the 'main guise' under which Lvee operates and is known to the greater public, he might be trying to get away from that typical sound that has defined the Airwave guise since so many years with this cd. And that's in a way understandable, cause which artist doesn't want to evolve in his music, instead of staying at the same level with the risk of getting uninspired and and too stuck in the usual formula to come up with something fresh?
And the direction in which this artist evolves might not appeal to the fans of his older work (I'm one of those people, sadly enough), but doesn't Lvee have the right to decide for himself which way he feels his music should evolve into? Just to try on how it feels for him, a new direction, a slightly fresh start, breaking out of his boundaries and finding out how the public experiences that? In the end he should produce what HE likes, not what everyone else likes. And of course, the market doesn't work that way, but if a producer stops making what he likes for making what the public likes, his music will eventually suffer, and both the producer and the public will lose...
And there's indeed - unfortunately - too much filler on this album (especially on disc 2 I feel, althought his is of course a matter of taste) for this album to be really praised as outstanding and fantastic. But in this whole process of discussion and argumentation, a lot of you seem to have forgotten that there is also a good side to this album. And I can understand Laurent when he gets upset while reading this thread, as it is quite possible that he only sees people criticising and declaring that this album is a huge disappointment (especially the ones that used to be his biggest fans and supporters. Losing their support means more to a producers than losing the support of floating listeners that listen to whatever is new or cool), as opposed to only very few people that post they like the album he's put blood, sweat and tears into. And that doesn't mean that you shouldn't express your justified disappointment, since everyone is entitled to its own. And I've got to give most of you guys credit for being polite, friendly, eloquent and well-argumented in expressing your criticism, disappointment and negative feelings towards this album. It's a thing rarely seen these days here on TA, and it has prevented this thread from going down the drain after a mere 2 pages, something that seems to be almost the normal development of threads in these sections.
But come on, even if you're disappointed with the album as a whole, that doesn't mean that you can't find some good points about the album that you can stress and bring to his attention, instead of always hammering on the disappointment? :) Laurent should take note of the posted criticism, but wouldn't it be fair to him (being the huge fans you claim to be :)) to give him at least a few positive comments as well, to make him feel his work wasn't a complete waste at all? |

Sorry for acting funny earlier in this topic, I know some might feel insulted. This has nothing personal.
I just want to make things clear for once in a good way.
I read all of your reactions with a lot of attention, and I DO respect anyone's opinion. If you think you did hurt my feelings, well think again. And I hope I didn't hurt anyone's feelings here.
Besides that, I'm not going to try to justify any single thing I made with this album, because it would be complete nonsense. I made choices, and feel comfortable and ok with all of them.
I do understand that some expected a lot more this or that... well sorry if you feel disappointed. However it's my choice, and if this record doesn't please, well I will assume the consequences without any kind of regret. I had a very good time doing this, and for me this is all that matters. I didn't let people interfere with what I wanted to do, and that means lots of risks. That means a lot of disappointed people too, but hey, this is just music, just another record we're talking about.
The music part of this album gets my approval, ANY single note of it. If you have any questions regarding why I did this or that, well you can pm me anytime, and I'll reply for sure. I feel right in my shoes for making harsh choices once in my lifetime. I'm not afraid about losing fans, because I don't want to be loved, my wife stands for that, I just want to enjoy this living as much as possible, by making good choices as well as bad ones.
This might be selfish in a way, I agree, but in the meantime, it's about love, and isn't love the most altruistic thing you'll ever have on earth?
Thanks for all your reactions, they be good or bad, no matter. We're different and mankind only gets better by standing away from unique thought!
Take care

Can't really blame you for being selfish - of course you make music for yourself first and the audience second. Besides, every time anyone makes a new album he'll lose some of his old audience (either it's too similar to his old stuff or too different - nothing's good enough) but gain at least the same amount of new listeners.
You can't - and you shouldn't - ever please everyone at the same time. |
