Airwave Presents: Trilogique (pg. 17)

To summarize my view, now a few days later:

Now. The whole album just reeks unfinished, it's the worst wasted potential case, possibly ever. The second disc is a complete borefest, the first is below average and the last is a bit above, with nice tunes like Beam.

Overall it's really below average - but that's what happens when you make a 3-cd album when there are hardly enough new ideas for one.

Review has been submitted at TranceCritic, but they seem to have some problems.

I'm not sure but by the samples on Airwave's site I think I'm gonna buy it.
The fact that he's talking about music and not about money on his t.nu interview makes me want to buy it.

Omer.

Eight past midnight, I'm not tired, as daylight saving time just kicked in.
Forgive the unprofessional sound designations, I’ll try & describe the sounds I hear the best I can.

I’m only commenting on CD1, as trance is the only style I can really relate to. I never comment on music that is not my style.

1. Sky Blues (Icarus Mix) (6:48)
Probably a personal message in the intro, not very poetic but who cares. *cranks up volume* This track intro is to die for, has a 1992 Flight feel to it. Very very original how the bass drum is supported by the other bass sounds, very successful. The bleepy ‘Mc Prog’-sound are very hypnotic in this melody. The melody that dominates the break is good. The main melody’s sound is exactly my style of trance, soft, slow and dreamy. I love supersaws. Damn pity it’s a bit simple; it would have been better had there been a bit of variation in the sequence melody. The sound comming in at 4:41 completes it, but is too nice to stay in the background like that, would’ve liked it a bit louder. Outro is ok. Beautiful track.
2. Hello Sunshine (Magical Dub) (8:43)
This begins VERY promising. I am anti-vocals, It takes attention away from the real music imo. Solid Airwave kick. The vocals are annoying. I would have liked the melody around 4:30 to be a bit ‘crispier’. The vocals really ruin the track; instrumentally, this would have been an absolutely unbelievable track, it’s such a pity. Such a summery feel to this track too. I don’t like the sound just after the break, but when it explodes a little later, it’s awesome, then it explodes again, and it’s even better, and again. Really a masterpiece imo, such a pity.
3. Angelica (6:59) Featuring Markus Schulz
I’m hearing ‘Holden & Thompson – Nothing’, very blatant; I’d even go as far as to call this the most obvious rip-off I’ve heard since The Mystery (Scooter doesn’t count, ok). I’m not commenting on the melody. Ok, putting that aside. The track has a lot of energy, that’s good. Could be my headphones, but something’s wrong with the sound in the break, it’s like it resonates or something just before and after the soft beat comes in. I do like the structure of the track. I would’ve liked a bit more hi-hats, but it’s ok. It would’ve been great if the main melodic part, continued a while longer, instead of breaking down when it does. Sometimes I get the feeling it’s a little rushed, this one; it’s like it’s in need of a revisit, to add more subtleties and smoothen it up a little more. Outro is too short, and sounds a little too abrubt. Maybe it doesn’t sound like it, but I do like the track, but my mind keeps wondering off to ‘Nothing’, and that is kinda annoying. For those of you that don’t know ‘Nothing’, it must be a terrific track.
4. Sunday Break (6:39)
It’s very different, but the beat structure reminds me of ‘Darren Tate – Prayer For A God’, bit breakbeat-y. It takes tempo away, and that’s a pity. Don’t like the intro, it lacks a little structure, that’s not exactly what I mean, but I can’t really voice what’s ‘wrong’ with it, but it doesn’t quite have a dominant melody, and I’m a melody kind of guy. The stringy synths are nice, but too simple a melody, and that bleepy bamboo sound melody doesn’t cut it for me. I’m not saying it’s a simple track, because it’s refined at a deeper level, but you have to dig deep and I like tracks a bit straight-in-your-face, with loads of extra elements to be found when you feel like digging deep. This one will have to grow on me if I am ever going to like it.
5. Terra Firma (5:54) Featuring Antidote
It begins dark in a very appealing way, then it gets more and more uplifting, very nice evolution. Ah, here comes the McProg bleep again, I love the melody it forms; around the 2 minute mark, its melody changes and that is absolutely brilliant, but at that point it’s not loud enough and unfortunately it fades away after that too. Just when you think (hope) it’s going to go euphoric uplifting, it turns dark again. Pity. The outro is too short, and aside from the high-frequency department, the outro is boring. But it is a nice track, it has drive, and I find it much better than your average bleepy track. Maybe a bpm or 2 extra would’ve been a good idea.
6. Higher & Higher (5:16)
Ok, solid start there, going steeply uphill in the beginning, fascinating stuff, but it’s remarkable (and deplorable) how the melody is often given a secundary role. It reminds me a bit of ‘Rank 1 – Top Gear’ at times. The main sound is not interesting and plain nice enough to bear the tune, gets a little boring. Don’t like this one and I don’t think I’ll listen too it enough for it to grow on me, I see too little potential in it for that.
7. People Just Don't Care (7:53)
Now this starts off much more melodic, I like it already. It’s a very nice intro, with a very nice hard Airwave beat. The melody is nice and promises a nice tune. Many nice sounds to listen to. This is a great tune, the melodies are great. And the sounds too. Only thing I would’ve liked to see is for the sound of the main melody to evolve to a little more euphoric feel; a bit like ‘Above The Sky’, which starts like the tune is talking to you, later talking loud and finally yelling. But I think this is a very very good tune, absolutely love it, it’s great.
8. Summer In (4:25)
This one starts quite driving, with some electroish sounds that don’t get too prominent, it’s quite good so far. Multilayered intro, yet no melody really worth mentioning in the beginning. Later on it’s a combination of reasonably simple melodies that somehow, added up, are interesting. The beat disappears and a melody that was taking over becomes stand-alone. It is a somewhat different style compared to the earlier tracks, more regular trance. The melody isn’t bad, but I don’t like silent parts in it: I concentrate on the synth and the 2-second ‘gaps’ in the melody bother me, kills the flow. Aside from the main melody there are quite some sounds, but no melody that you can really concentrate on during the climax, gives the tune an impression of simplicity. Then the loudest melody stops and there are other little melodies to listen too (that were there before), but it’s relatively simple and nothing special really. Standard tune, definitely not bad, but nothing awesome.

Quarter to 3, I’ll finish this some other time.

Precisely 2 weeks later, been hooked on People Just Don't Care, what a tune, and Sky Blues too.

9. Summer Out (4:55)
Quite dark intro, has me nodding my head. Ow, that melody comes in, absolutely love it, this promises tuneage, yes I’m really into this tune for now. Very original sound around 2:30 there. It’s going to need more melody; the melody in the background is great. Then the tune chills out. I was under the impression that this was all intro, but it’s outro already unfortunately. I do recognise the finesse in this track. Except in the outro, that doesn’t cut it for me, it’s like the track needed an outro so it got one and that’s it. I still like it because it has such a hypnotic feel to it, which is a quality I like (asides from euphoria). I’ll listen to this a lot I suspect, definitely needs an extended version.
10. The Promise I Made (5:12) Featuring Jon O'Bir
Kick sound a little weird in the mix there. Ok, kind of an electroish feel in the very beginning there, like a little bit of Green Martian influence, but luckily the tune turns somewhat uplifting. There’s a break that’s not bad: first off it’s too simple, but another melody joins in and it all comes together nicely. Love it how that kick just comes in with a crash, the following part is great. Very nice sounds and atmosphere. That electro sound comes back; don’t really like that in this tune, supersaw would’ve been nice. It’s like the chilled sequence melody doesn’t add up with the more dancefloor orriented extra. This outro is way better, that guitar-style sound fits much better. Still, very nice tune.
11. When Things Go Wrong 2005 Meets Sunspot 2005 (14:14) Featuring Rising Star I love it just by looking at the title, hehe. Initial intro with evolution, digging that. The intro goes from impressionist to expressionist in seconds beautifully there. Cranking up the volume. Progression stops a little. Hints of When Things Go Wrong in the background proceeding to the foreground. Emotional like crazy starting at 2 minutes. The melody that start off the Original Mix of this track is prominent for a moment there, but it disappears a while there; I’d rather it didn’t. I like the sound of the main melody better in the original mix, as it’s more ‘euphoric’ there, that’s what made the original mix so brilliant, emotion and euphoria at the same time. This feels more like progressive trance. The complicated melody is slowly introduced again, beautiful isn’t it, one could build a whole tune around that. The break at 5 minutes is very nice and promises a little more euphoria, and it seems a tiny bit harder from there on. It’s very very nice; only the sound of the (original’s) main melody could’ve been better. I am very happy to see a more important role for the secundary melody (I mean the one that opens the original mix, it seems slightly altered in this version, can’t tell why, it was just perfect the way it was). That part around 7:30 is very very nice. Outro is still interesting and the transition to Sunspot is cool.
This starts straight up with the beautiful melody. The intro is actually better than the previous versions. I love it how everyting clears up with the introduction of the bassdrum, adding another melody at the same time. The break just promises pure bliss. Then the main melody fades in with a weak beat to accompany that. 11:50, how beautifull is this? Awesome and it still hasn’t burst. When it does, it’s absolutely lovely, yet I can’t help but miss a little energy, does this track have lower bpm compared to the previous versions, I suspect it does, at least it feels that way. The most energetic part of the track is way too short, only half a minute. Outro is good, but this too seems edited and builds down too fast. This rework certainly deserves a spot between the other versions; it’s like a chilled down version, but still very appealing altough both Original and Don’t Cry My Love mixes excell in euphoria.

This album is very good. IMO the best tune is Sky blues. It's great! :)

Prototrance
Bought Trilogique last week, excellent work, nice one Laurent :D

Been following your tunes since 'Venus of my dreams'. Nice to hear loads of new ideas on this album.

Best moments for me:-

Appletonz - love the gated vocal over the breakbeat.
Bellywood - very non-Airwave but I love it.
Beam - Love the melody
Gong Zu - Interesting beat structure, when the pads are layered under the melody it sounds really rich.
CCCP Genius - I love the control on the delays under the wicked melody.

I was a bit unsure of the decision to have the album mixed. Would have been nice to have full tracks but I'm warming to it now.
Phortastic
There is an unmixed version for sale also bro...
