i agree
one of my favorite cities is Naples just because of how ing dirty and crazy it is. That also struck me about Mexico City and Sao Paolo (another favorite city) The cities where I've lived, NYC and Rome are both pretty ing dirty in various ways and very mixed up programmatically (especially rome). You've got to love the ridiculousness and surreal nature of of natural human occupation. Right now I'm designing a project for an early childhood education center which is more or less invaded by a smoking lounge for roman notai/lawyers/businessmen and also the youth culture in the area. There's also a public park on top which connects up a system of terraces to some major garden areas. For me it's all about the collision of characters and subcultures.
on the other hand I like Berlin too which is pretty much the opposite of Naples. :p, but that's mainly because of the cultural/artistic edge it has. I find the emptiness and cleanliness sometimes very unsettling, but the public transportation leaves you with only warm feelings :) |

Aside from Quebecois, how cosmopolitan is Montreal really though? I've never been there, I just always viewed Toronto as more international in nature.
There are days in DC where I probably hear six or seven foreign languages on my way to work before I catch my first snippet of English. My bus route goes through a few predominantly international neighborhoods and then I get off outside the World Bank, which is only like 15% US employees. And then about a quarter of the students in my program are international as well. Adds a little flavor to the day, and makes it easy to find the most amazing ethnic restaurants. Like within two blocks from my apartment there's an Italian, Greek, Chinese, Thai, Ethiopian, Mexican, and Peruvian restaurant. As well as a fifties-style American diner and a French bakery. |
I've never been one to say Montreal is lavish, I just think it's awesome, regardless of it being home. A lot of people call it " Mini Europe, some people call it a dump, some call it "alright but nothing special" It's the people who have never been there that say the worst things about it. "No hospitality, rude, cocky, ignorant blablabla" All cities have that, but I think it's more a hatred for the French that they have.
OH and can you 'splain this sentence, "side from Quebecois, how cosmopolitan is Montreal really though? ". |

And assuming you are talking about Nottingham, UK..that doesn't count. That's not a third world country, that's just a poor city.
EDIT: I miss read that, my badums. |
yeah, I was just teasing, Nottingham is rated as one of the worst places in the uk but it's pretty soft where i've been, in the city centre hardly seen anyone, but obviously the suburbs are a lot rougher. Just some silly humour really, it's ranked as the guncrime capital of the uk, yet i've felt safer there at midnight than in places I know much better ;)

I guess my main point is that I think the lesser thought of cities are a lot more 'beautiful' such as copenhagen, stockholm, prague, Seville, Bordeaux, Bilbao, Berlin, Munich, St Petersburg etc. |

the original point (albeit a silly one to try & pass time) was just to rib a couple of places where people think highly of themselves, trust me, most people in places don't think that highly of it :p It's kept us busy for a bit, so that's better than just waiting for some alts to bug us eh ? |

You basically answered my question. I was just asking how Montreal was more or less international than other Canadian cities, aside from the whole "a good chunk of the population speaks French thing" |
