So I saw something in the newspaper in Cambridge this weekend that kinda annoyed me. Unfortunatly I don't have the actual letters...but maybe Cale can post them if he has an online copy.

We were reading letters to the paper that were in regards to Canadians that were trapped in Lebanon. Some of the letters said that vactioners were pissed b/c they had to travel to another area in Lebanon in order to get rescued. There were other letters saying that they were ashamed to say they were Canadian b/c it was unacceptable that their country would take so long to rescue them, or that the conditions of their rescue boats/planes were not up to par (i.e. luxurious). Another person complained b/c it was dispecable that Canada would stand back and enjoy their luxurious lifestyle while children in Lebanon were starving and "laying in the sun".

These letters pissed me off b/c...

1. It's not Canada's responsibility to get these vacationers out of Lebanon. I think it's quite nice of Canada to do that, so they should be happy that anything is being done for them. When I've vacationed in Florida or Hawaii...I didn't complain that there was a hurricane and it was my countries responsibility to save me! I'm out of the country on vacation...why should Canada be responsible for my well being?

2. I don't have a passport handy to look at, but if I'm not mistaken, doesn't it WARN people of going to places like Lenanon, Iraq, Afghanastan etc. that they are not guaranteed to be safe places to visit?

3. If these people are so ashamed of being Canadian, why do they want to be saved in order to come back to Canada?

4. They should be happy that Canada is going in period to get them back safely to their homes...is it truely necessary to have luxurious ships and planes to rescue them? Personally I wouldn't care how I got back, as long as I made it home safely!

5. And as for the man that was complaining about how Canada could stand back and watch these children getting a tan in the sun and starving to death...I bet that man wasn't doing anything himself to help those children b/c all he cared about was his country flying a private jet in to save him!

I know that not all of the Canadians that are in Lebanon do not hold opinions like the ones who wrote letters to the paper...but I think that some of those people are being a bit ridiculus.

I agree ... and if you watch the news, its not even IN tourists...its Lebaneze people who imigrated to Canada, took their citezenships and than went back to Lebanon...and now the war started so they want back...they cant eve in speak english! If they liked it so much there...stay the there, if not you should have stayed here. I hate it when people are hypocrits like that. Canada is doing a nice thing...and when you get a favor...YOU DONT ASK HOW YOU WANT IT! They should all be saying thank you for not receiving a bomb up their ass like the rest of their country!

You know what? I'm done with you. You're just wasting my time and trying to pick a fight. Like I said, I have my opnion, you have yours. If you don't like it...I don't care...it's not your opinion and I'm not looking for your approval.

having an opinion does not make someone right, even less when based on very little facts :)

Exactly...so don't think you're opinion is right just b/c your head is too big.

This is thread full of heated and intense arguments which is good and I must say a lot of good points brought out about the situation occuring in Lebanon, citizenship, our government, etc....:)

Yes, we are entitled to our opinions...but really...are the personal attacks necessary?

Now for my two cents...

IMO, the group of people who are fleeing the country and who are complaining about the process in which they are evacuated ideally should not complain for reasons stated by many of you. They should be at least grateful that their respective governments are doing what they can to pull them out of danger. Though, who is it for most of us to really understand the emotional stress, and frustrations these people are going through? One can speculate that these emotions fuel their inclinations to complain. In that case, their complaints can be "somewhat justified". Though hopefully, these "complainers" are in the process of realizing that they are, despite the tramua, fortunate for being rescued.

The end...

geez... there's 50k citizens there, about 15k-20k tourists.

If we look at those who came back in the last few days, very very few (not even 10%) were actually living in Lebanon, the rest are tourists.

why would they come to canada anyways, we all live in igloos and go to work in our canoes.:stongue: :stongue: :stongue:

Thank you for that thoughtful post.

its all about common sense, something not everyone behind a keyboard possess.

We can whine and bitch, but no one here went thru a bombardment, very precarious hygiene state and on top having to deal with some dimwit civil servant telling you that offices are now closed and will open at 9am :)

I do think it's a bit crazy that some of these people with dual citizenship go to Lebanon and then want Canada to save them when it's unsafe...and when the coast is clear they just go back.

No its not crazy, your country is in war you flee. 10-20-30 years later, you decide that things are now peacful to go back and live the rest of your life there. You're still a Canadian citizen and every citizen should be treated the same, thank god we don't have second class citizens like some other backward countries.

The same can be said to the thousands of HKers, Israelis, and countless other minorities here.

Canada takes a gamble when they accept immigrants, some decide to go back, but the majority live and work and pay their taxes here.

When you'll be elected as the next prime minister, change the laws to put an expiry date on citizenships for those who don't pay taxes for a given number of years... and we'll see how that goes.

Pray to God i won't be elected primenister lol ... and thank you , first of all for agreeing with me that they are not tourists...now, yes thats fine, they moved back there cause its safe...BUT since you are talking about risks...they took a risk when they went back there, things have never been safe in that country, and now that things have gotten worse its ok to want to come back...BUT DONT U IN DARE BLAMING CANADA, thats whats pissing me off! This country has given them a second chance when it acceptem them to imigrate here, made them citezens...and they left, and now...THEY ARE THE ONES STILL BITCHING??? i would drop them off in the Mediteranean Sea if you asked me...lol
