Ok, so how did people keep themselves informed before the internet?

The same way they can still do it today:

hey i travel extensively to some pretty random places. And i dont expect the government to do anything for me if hits the fan. I know what its like to be in some places that arent exactly as safe as canada is. AND IM A RESIDENT!

People just need to stop expecting the government to hold their hands at every given moment. And more importantly they should be grateful if they get any help at all.

People bitch and complain and its destroying our country. Whether its lebanon, someone smoking, the docks or even someone on a bus with loud headphones. The incessent whining that goes on in canada is really getting to me. And whats worse is that the REAL problems that need to be solved usually get ignored in favour of the petty ones. That IMO is the real tragedy of the whole thing.

Just my two cents:
I agree that people should not be complaining about how they were rescued - if the media is sensationalizing this story, shame on them as well as the people complaining.

When you have family over there who are living in fear that their lives may be lost you tend to look at things in a different way. Regardless of your nationality, human life is still of the utmost importance and all people who are not involved deserve to be rescued or helped in a time of crisis.

I hope the innocent are keeping safe and they find a way to endure this horrific time - I'm sure we can all agree on this.

of course we all hope that everyone is ok. But the point here is the sense of entitlement that people seem to have when they shouldnt be entitled to anything.

But yes you are right, lets hope the fighting stops.

i believe it... the more rules you have, the harder it is to operate "legally" and the more you need to payoff people in order to exist.

hmmmmmm

I may be totally off base on this one and I'm pretty sure you're going to say I am :toothless but I do mean this in the most non-argumentative way possible. If I was in Lebanon and was kidnapped I would expect the Canadian government to help find me and do whatever is in their power to get me back.
Now, if I was stuck there in a time of war with no way out, I would also hope that the Canadian government would do whatever they can to get me back. If they have to stuff me on a plane in the baggage compartment or on a ship filled with rats I would hope they would just get me home and I would not complain about it.
I think Lisa's post made a good point in that the individuals that are complaining about how they were saved are spoiled Canadians - most of us believe all Canadians are spoiled. I just think that in a time of desperate need the Canadian government has a responsibility to its citizens to give aid in any way they can.

Regardless, I'm glad we can all agree that our thoughts and prayers are with ALL people.

You forgot that most of the "Canadians" in lebanon are actually dual citizens that no longer live in canada. They are in fact lebanese who are now using the canadian passport for convenience. The government should evacuate canadian RESIDENTS only. The dual citizens who are non residents are actually residents of lebanon and should not be entitled to FREE PASSAGE.

While I agree with you in principle we only have one class of citizen in Canada thus regardless of residency if you're a citizen you get the same treatment.... it's called the rule of law.... I'd rather we get burned by it once and a while then give it up.
