The Politics of Restaurants (pg. 8)

Well I happen to judge people who don’t leave a tip. Cheap people annoy me. I have a few friends who are like that and when we split the bill and they see me leaving the tip, they won’t leave one, and then I have to explain to them that I’m tipping for MY half of the bill. Then we argue about it and it usually ends up with me saying, “Jesus Christ, I’ll tip for your half, you obviously need it more than I do”. lol

It’s just stupid and it annoys me when people nickel and dime when they are out at dinner or lunch or whatever. If you can’t afford it, then don’t go out. I’m always buying my friends drinks and lunch and stuff…that’s just how I am. I don’t necessarily write cheap people off as far as friends goes, but you better believe I’m gonna bust their balls about it when they are griping about leaving another $5 on a lunch tab. It’s FIVE in dollars.

And Lilith, I know what you’re saying about how it’s different in other countries..i knew that. My point was that I don’t like when people visit here and don’t tip and use the excuse that it’s because that’s not how it is in their country. You have to adapt when you travel or else you ‘re just ignorant in my book.

You're retarded, even after tip out, you still make about 14$ an hour easily. Dont make it seem like waiters dont make enough money as is, cause after workin in restaurants for several years, I know theres enough bull to go around. The other people in the place earn that tip out just as much as you really dont.

You're making the assumption that the restaurant pulls in good tippers in the first place. I worked in a brewpub, which pulls in a lot of cash and carry/beer drinking people. The tips on those customers are usually a quarter here, a quarter there, which is WELL below the 15% gratuity. Depending on my section, there would be nights that I would tip out more than half of my actual tips, which in my opinion is B.S.

With cash and carry, you do more running around, and more bussing than usual, and have less food orders. Not to mention you get the idiots who walk out on you. In the end, the tips weren't phenomenal.

It's a US thing, wages in service industries are factored in to include a tip as part of those wages which is seperate from taxation and more or less a 'required' part of getting services anywhere.

Anywhere else in the world, it's called bribery :D

It's big in some parts of Europe too.

I guess it’s different in America, but you guys sound like a bunch of cheap ignorant bastards! lol

It's called being British. :)

If the person has given good service I'll give them a load of the spare change I have in my pocket. You'd be suprised how much running around the pengiuns do for a few quarters.

Leave it to greedy North Americans to expect money for services not always rendered.

Yep, worked that out very quick in about the first hour of being in New York... and watching movies :)
(Sadly no amount of money will get a taxi driver to break the speed limit by x2 and I didnt have a gun at the time to further motivate him)
When I was doing some sales training of new products there it did manage to piss me off when half the staff where wandering around during sessions whinging about commissions and so on. It did make it very hard for about, oh an hour or so before they copped a work ethic lecture in the ear and a lot of screaming.
21 hour flight, 4 hours sleep = cranky :p

You’d be surprised at how many of those “penguins” are busting their ass through law school you cheap prick;)

And jenny I see your point, but when I dine out with friends and family, I’m there for good food and to enjoy the company of my friends, not to sit there and critique the service. While it is important to have friendly service and have the food on my table in a timely manner, I understand that happens and sometimes the kitchen is to blame and bla bla bla. So I usually end up leaving the standard 20% for dinner anyway. Like I said, unless my server is disgusting…then that’s a different story.
