in regards to 1080p..assuming a 1080p source (BD, HDDVD, some PS3 games etc) anything over 50" is where youll really appreciate 1080p. my last pioneer i sat around 8 or 9 feeet away..50" 768p set..i saw no pixels. my current one is a 1080p 60" at about 7 feet and again, no pixels. if it was a 768p 60" at my distance, id probably see some screen door effect though...even if your source isnt 1080p itll be scaled to match the panels resolution...id always take a 1080p set even watching non 1080p material just because the pixels are smaller...
how far are you planning on sitting from the screen?
going from a 50" to a 58" is like 30% more screen area. for only $400 thats a HUGE jump.
ps-id ignore everything australiangq says. hes completely and totally wrong on almost every point hes attempting to make.
pps-there is no such thing as a 1080i plasma |
Ya, I might be pretty close. 6' to 10' away. as for the 1080i... check the specs I linked, I saw 1080i in there. If not, no big deal... I won't be hooking up any high end digital source anytime soon. Whatever cable may provide, and possibly LTA since I will be tempted to finally get that since I would have something to appreciate it now.
I'm as much as a n00b in these TVs as the submitter, so thanks for helping me out too. |

well it might accept a 1080i signal, but that doesnt mean its a 1080i display. flat panels dont display interlaced video the way a CRT does. theyll take whatever you throw at it, resolution-wise, and scale it to fit the native resolution of the panel. for example my old pioneer was a 768p set, but it would accept a 1080p signal. it would then just scale the 1080p signal to match its 768p vertical lines of resolution.
interlacing is a process where alternating frames are shown one after another. progressive scanning is when all frames are shown in their entirety. traditionally, 1080i was better for "still" images as it had more resolution, and 720p would be better for sports and other fast moving things. with the introduction of 1080p you can sort of have your cake and eat it too

oh and for my money youd want a 1080p set at 58" if youre only sitting 6' away. youll love how immersive it is at that distance. THX recommends around 6.5' for 60" to properly fill your field of vision the way a proper theatre does.
that being said, check my earlier post about resolution only being 1 of 3 or 4 things you should look for when buying a tv. 1080 lines of vertical resolution dont mean squat if your colours are |

| Oh yea, Best Buy Canada is matching the US prices on a lot of their gear now, so if you wanna get some high-end electronics, now is the time. |

Actually they do have one withe HDMI out and it is called PACE(no Iam not talking about the HDPVR),good luck trying to get one of those,99% of the time they are out of stock.:p
Also Pace has some problems and most of the times it does work so well for example:
-remote usage is eratic, sometimes it doesn't pick up keystrokes at all, very annoying
-pressing settings sometimes brings up guide. try it again, settings come up.
-some channels come up blank, no video, no sound, flip channel away and back again and it works
-flipping between HD and SD doesn't give you the real mode, just normal and zoom, unlike 3250HD, so you don't know if you're in 480p or 480i.
SO to be honest stay with the the box you have now until they resolve these issues. |
..I need to get a new HD PVR. Mine sucks big time. I think there's somethign wrong w/ the HD or something. It is constantly make these weird grinding noises. It also misses recordings all the time. I setup wekely recordsings, and deleted them, but they are 'invisible' and records randomly lol.
Who knows :S
I use my own Logitech remote which is pretty nifty stuff! I love the one touch buttons that will turn everthing on! Got it for a wicked it price too! If you can find a nice one, the ligtech universal remotes are awesome. I think my remote was on sale for like $109.99 on sale from $299.99.
Definitely worth every penny. |

there are figures here in this thread that prove you wrong. this is also talking about the big box retail consumer brands...there are loads of smaller, specialty brands that arent carried at FS or BB or costco....brands like fujitsu and runco etc. |
