Things you need to know.

- If you get 1080p, get bigger than 40". You will even have a hard time getting them below that size.

- Get LCD. There is no reason to get a plasma anymore. LCD is far superior tech.

- Get 8ms response time at the maximum. Otherwise you will see ghosting, which is not nice.

- Get HDMI 1.3, to make sure you can play back Hi-Definition video, without any compatibility problems.

- Get 120Hz, if you can. It will make movies and TV shows look smoother than they look on standard 60hz TVs.

- Get an ATSC tuner. This will allow you to get Hi-Def programming over regular antenna. Normal TV signals stop in 2011, so its a nice future proof feature. I use it now, and get hi-def on old school rabbit ears.

As for brands, I prefer Samsung and Sharp. With either of these stats, the TV should not cost more than $2800.

Buy your TV from Sears

Open a Sears Card (costs nothing and there are no annual fees)

Charge the TV on your card and they will give you a percentage off.

By doing this, you will also receive around 5000 points which you can then redeem right away and they will send you gift cards ranging from $30-$250 depending on the amount of your initial purchase.

Plus, if you wait for a "Scratch and Save" event (they happen once a month) you will get another percentage off.

PLUS - read the flyers (they are probably lurking around somewhere in your bluebox) there are usually weekend specials.

Sony sold their LCD division to Samsung, now Samsung is the 2nd biggest LCD manufacturer next to LG-Philips.

In terms LCD or plasma: LCD right now is definately the better route to go, if this question came up a couple years ago everyone would most likely say plasma. DLP is the 3rd option but it isn't very popular. OLED will be the next step in TV's.

Suggestions and tips for buying LCD TV's

- look for a TV with 1080P nothing less and nothing else.
- HDMI 1.3
- Contrast Ratio > the higher the better (LG usually has the highest)
- If money isn't that much of an issue... get Sharp or Samsung (Sharp ideally)
- look for other features like in menu, firmware upgrade, # HDMI inputs, etc.

If you're on a budget and looking for something good

You'll probably be saving $1000 on this and I've seen many of these units being sold and none came back yet.

honestly, its not worth it. have you heard any of the stories about what its like at the border these days? hours to cross not to mention the unbelievably busy stores. not worth it in my opinion.

the border isnt really that bad. yeah.. holidays are obviously pretty sucky, but go during the week .. and obviously not at rush hour.. and you should get through no problem in like ten minutes. Theres only problems if youre a sketchy :stongue:

I work for LG. I would not recommend buying in the states because the warranty does not cross the boarder. Go with LCD and not plasma. And for the person that said plasma is not made anymore, they have no idea what they are talking about.

What do you think about the LG Shine phone? I am sue an upgrade on the 30th and I may get one.

Also, I think we are getting an LCD tv - would you know if there are going to be price drops after Christmas?

Thanks x

A couple of friends just went to the states for the very same reason as yours, and honestly its not worth your time. Clothes at outlet malls are still the biggest savings down there. Electronics wise, you're far better off here, especially when you factor in the cost of your time and transportation there.

As for the TV itself, I bought a Panasonic LCD, but I would suggest going with either a Samsung or Sharp Aquos; they're amongst the most stylish visually, with phenomenal picture clarity and quality.

For resolution support, even though everyone touts 1080p, unless you actually have a source producing that signal, what's the use, thus if you have an HD gaming system (such as the xbox 360 and ps3) and have an HD-DVD or BLU-RAY player. Standard DVD players do not produce such a high resolution, so you're paying for technology that you will not really use. Nonetheless, I guess it can't hurt to buy a future-proof setup.

(50" is the perfect size for 1080P. Don't waste your money on a 1080P TV if it's under 50 as you won't see the actual resolution. To be honest though, 1080P is just a marketing gimmick)

- Get LCD. There is no reason to get a plasma anymore. LCD is far superior tech.

(Plasma works better in drak environments with little natural sunlight; eg. basements. It's also better with response and contrast ratio. It's hardly inferior. Again, just like with 1080P, they're only good after a certain size. 42" is the minimum for Plasma.)

(Samsung makes the best LCD's at the moment. You (Special K) should also look at Westinghouse if you're not a brand name whore. Excellent TV's for a lower price, so you're not paying for all their marketing costs.)

fixed ;)

Go LCD. They consume less energy.

If you get 1080p - you need at least a 40" to take advantage of the resolution from more than 5' away viewing. Use the above graph to make a decision on resolution and screen size. Don't over-buy your resolution for your use.
