I worked boxing day last year at Futureshop. The entire store was devoid of good sales, and all the managers knew it, and commented on it. There was one really good sale worthy of the boxing day label, which was on a LCD TV, but they wanted to sell a package with it.

I would wait till early next year to get a big ass TV. Price drops have slowed considerably in the second half of this year on large flat panels, but they should start dropping again in a few months.

OLEDs are coming out next year, which will drive down the price of LCD a bit.

Finally some posts from people with a clue on here. Plasma has sooooo many advantages over LCD it's not even funny. To those of you who said plasma will only last 5 years. The new ones are advertising a lifespan of 40-60,000hrs. That's over 8hrs a day for like 30years. I'm sure in 30 years you'll be ready for a replacement.

My Future Shop Boxing Day 1200W panasonic microwave at $79 was a steal, and still is to this day. I use the Kingston car transmitter almost every day, I also got the ram for my PC. OH... my $130 webcam for 40 bucks was also a steal.

I took advantage of all the P3's.

- plasma vs lcd? which should I go for?

- what is a good brand to look out for?

- are there any spec's that I should be looking for when looking for my new TV?!

go for LCD. a bit more expensive but worth it. plasma sucks, heres why.

-heavy, bulky, large, whatever u wanna call it, their bigger. LCDs are super light and thin and take up less space.
-plasmas get color burn, lcds do not. color burn is pink or green blotches that form on ur screen from a plasma tvs old age.
-plasma are power suckers, aka they use alot of power. lcds use alot less power.
-anyone who tells u plasma has better coontrast ratios and darker blacks, is bull. LCDS now a days are just as good.

i think sharp is the best lcd producer. cheaper then sony and u get more for ur money. alot of sony tvs are 5=8ms response time, sharp tvs are all 4ms. they have beautiful lcds.

u want a high contrast ratio, a low response time

LOL at plasma fanboys. u buy a plasma b/c its cheaper right? that doesnt make it better. LCD is way better. plasma has no advantage of lcd now a days

you actually couldnt be more wrong. please read my first post for some clarification. the only things LCD has going for it is its brightness and its resistance to IR and burn in. until recently there werent any 1080p plasmas, but thats changed drastically in the last year or so.

take a look at the science behind plasma vs. the science behind LCD. it is physically impossible for an LCD to make the colour black, or to even approach the level of black most plasmas can produce, let alone the 8th gen pioneer sets i was talking about earlier. they produce far and away the deepest blacks and have the most contrast out of any flat panel on the market.

dont believe me?

one great review ^^^

but my personal favourite is this one:

quote:
Greatest flat panel ever.

quote:
Forgive my dipping into hyperbole for the caption, but there really wasn't another way to go. It's not just the fact that the PRO-110FD creates a beautiful image. It's that the image it creates is such a step above every other flat panel on the market that it is not even comparable. There's that hyperbole again. I'll stop and let the performance speak for itself.

quote:
The black level, as measured in our lab, is 0.004 foot-lamberts. For comparison, the best black level we've measured on a plasma previously was 0.012 ft-L, which was a Panasonic TH-42PX60U. The best black level on an LCD we've ever measured was 0.006 ft-L on the Sharp LC-52D92U. So that 0.004 ft-L is lower than any other flat panel we've ever measured. While excellent, it's still not black. As in, you can still see when the TV is on or tell the black letterbox bars from the dark room beyond. I know, I'm asking for a lot. I mean, you'd have to get a projector and a pretty big screen to reach a better black level (or, admittedly, a CRT). But as impressive as that measurement is, it isn't even the amazing part.

quote:
At 4,020:1, the PRO-110FD's full-on/full-off contrast ratio is so good, it is nearly double that of the next best flat panel. Read that again. Double. This isn't an incremental improvement, as we've seen with all flat panels over the past few years. This is a marked jump. And that's comparing it with the best of the rest. If you take the average contrast ratio of current flat panels, it's three or four times better. The irony is that plasmas aren't supposed to have a good full-on/full-off contrast ratio; it's in their very design not to. I'll come back to that, as this still isn't the amazing part.

quote:
ANSI contrast ratio, which is the measurement of eight 100-percent-white and eight 0-percent-black squares arranged in a checkerboard pattern, provides a sort of worst-case scenario of what you'll see on the screen in terms of contrast ratio. The measured ANSI contrast of 3,239:1 is almost three times better than the best plasmas and most LCDs, and a full 50 percent better than the highest we've previously measured. And even all of that pales in comparison with this next measurement.

i could go on and on and on quoting reviews all day...keep in mind, this is a professional reviewer with actual equipment who is testing this. the set stands up in the lab as well as it stands up to the eyes.

oh and if the weight of your tv is a factor in which model you buy...wow..i dont evn know what to say. good luck with that :)

I currently own a 46" LCD Sony XBR2 silver finish. 3 HDMI, 2 component 9 inputs overall....STILL NOT ENOUGH FOR ME! LOL

gonna be running Panasonic BD30 Bluray and possibly Onkyo HD-DVD first release, plus next Rogers box that releases with HDMI instead of ing DVI which is a joke.

1080i broadcast does well on this, but when put to use of 1080p, the picture is so crisps it never breaks! especially with the new 1080p VC-1 codec. For 360 and PS3 your output to LCD is great, plasma is good for TV really, but takes awhile to get used to the brights, plus it gets hot really easily.
