I finally bought it.

I bought the 58" plasma at costco, and brought it home with a friend who had a pickup. The thing is a beast. I'm happy with the colours, it's sharp, sound is ok on its own. I haven't hooked anything up to it yet (rest of the stuff later). I just plugged the small roof antenna cable in.

I was pleasantly surprised I get HD signal from way up here in Aurora!!! I'm watching the Spice Girls on CTV right now. I actually see Posh Spice's pancake makup covered bad complexion. I can actually see the little covered up pimples she has on her cheeks. I see tiny beads of sweat on people on stage's foreheads. I also seem to get CITY-TV and both French and English CBC too so I can't wait to watch the next games. I'm totally surprised my HD channels come crystal clear, and my analog signals come in snowy. It seems digital signals have a greater range. I don't know why I would buy cable if I was living downtown, when HD comes in so clearly and for free.

I saw part of that. Interestingly enough, a lot of the footage was not actually in HD, just digital. They had taken a lot of older SD footage and just zoomed, then cropped to make it the proper aspect ratio, so it would blend with the new HD footage.

Congrats on the TV purchase! I hope ATSC treats you well. Me and my 4 channels are doing just fine, thanks.

As for the difference between your HD and analog signals. With HD, it comes in, or it doesn't (no fuzzy option). If it does, it will look perfect. If your analog signal is snowy, then that means your signal strength is really low, which you can check in your menus. If it is in fact low, be prepared for outages during storms, both terrestrial and solar.

Sports nuts would go crazy without cable. You cannot get all these extra packages for nhl, nfl, mlb, etc, with antenna. Say bye to super station, movie network, all that stuff. If you are happy with 'basic cable', then antenna is the way to go.

Now the best thing about getting HD over antenna, is that you also get 5.1 sound! Watching movies on TV is awesome, no need to get the DVD!

Sorry, not true. Plasmas were the leader for a long time because they were able to bring down the prices on large flat panels. It is only in recent times (last 2 years) that LCD prices have dropped, to the point where it is no longer necessary to consider plasmas.

Yes, plasmas used to cost $27k for 27inches. At that time, you couldn't even get a 27inch LCD (iFire, what happened?). Only by the time the panels got to the sub $7000 range did the LCDs become more cost feasible.

No such thing. The HD signals use the same frequency band as regular analog transmissions. Its a gimmick.

I agree, TOTAL SCAM... The antenna I have on the roof is a round UFO-like antenna on a pole over the garage, that's been there for years. Soon it seems, basic cable will be useless for Torontonians if all the local channes come clearly in HD.

For the Spice Girls show, the HD parts when they were doing the individual interviews with the girls.

Orko, which is the 4th channel you get in HD as well?
robbiej
hey abercrombie.. does it tell you anywhere like if you press an info button what the channels coming in as? like 480i / 720 etc?

I get:
5-1 - CBC (e)
9-1 - CTV
25-1 - CBC (f)
57-1 - CityTV
66-1 - SunTV

Global will be OTA-HD next year (july'08), and apparently Omni 1 and 2 are already OTA-HD, but I cannot find any proof, just some hearsay.

The buildings really throw it off. I used to get decent reception out in Mississauga as well, because there are very few buildings to block the signal. My guess is that Arora is similar, far but with fewer obstructions.

I live mid-town now, and should get more channels, but the buildings get in the way.
robbiej
how dyou pick those up just a regular antenna?
Orko
I use a Zenith Silver Sensor. Rated to be the best indoor, non-amplified antenna for city use. The shape helps to eliminate doubling, caused by the signal bouncing of neighbouring buildings. I put mine on a short cable (important), on the windowsill, outdoors.

Picked it up for $35 off of ebay.

That makes sense Bobby.

my HDs are;
5-1 - CBC (e)
9-1 - CTV
25-1 - CBC (f)
57-1 - CityTV

disregard anyone who says "buy Samsung" I have a 52 inch Samsung and it is a nightmare from basically day 20. I have already put 400 dollars into it.

Their Customer inservice is terrible, their parts are the cost of a slightly smaller Sony.

Sure the picture quality is good (why I bought it) but IT HAS NOT BEEN WORTH THE HEADACHE.
