People doubted my 58" plasma's brand, until they came over and saw it.
It's Maxent (from Costco). I did my research beforehand.... what sold me is the panel is Panasonic. Best TV I ever bought. |

looks like i might take the plunge this boxing day so I'm gonna have to go through this thread in more detail!
my plan is to have the exact model i want fully researched and ready to go so i can pull the trigger if i get a good deal on boxing day, might even go south of the border if i have to...
i will also be ordering all the cables i need through ebay or clist or something because i saw a news feature a few months back that actually tested the the quality of the $200+ HDMI monster cables vs. $20 no names u can get from ebay and they was NO difference, lol, when a CBC a/v guy hooked his testing equipment up to both TVs with each cable. lol i'm a n00b when it comes to this so i'll go with what i saw on TV!!! LOL
oh and the reason i want to pull the trigger is because i learned the difference between the fluorescent-light LCD vs. the LED LCD when I was at the Sony Store yesterday and MY GOD what a difference in picture quality!!!! The newest LED LCD line from Bravia is $7,000 for the 55" and $5,000 for the 46". Then the dude shows me the tiny 11" O-LED!!!!!!!!! or whatever it's called....a frickin CARDBOARD THIN TV SCREEN!!!!!!!! WTF!!!!!!!!!
it was unreal. $2,500 for this tiny little monitor. Apparently, a 25" version will be available this xmas for $15,000!!!!!!!!!! LMAO. awesome. |

They probably will not have a 25" OLED TV ready for Christmas. The technology just is not ready for the mainstream yet.
As for what you need to know:
- 120hz makes a diff, pay for it, it is worth it.
- LED backlight TV's are at a huge premium right now. if you liked it, go for it.
- Never get a plasma
- Samsung looks better for video games, Sony looks better for movies/tv, i prefer the samsungs.
- Yes, HDMI cables are not worth $200. they either work, or don't, its digital, no need for expensive cables. Hell you could use ethernet cables, which cost pennies a foot. |

| I bought my HDMI at Factory Direct. They're regularly $9.99 there, but they have coupns in their flyers from time to time at $4.99. Thery had a grand opening in Newmarket, and I bought 2 for $2.99 each. Now you have a good idea of how much these cables actually cost and how much retail stores profit from them. |

So question here, as i know crap-all abt TVs these days...
My pops is looking at getting a new TV, and he seems torn between the
1) LG 52LG70
or the
2) Sharp Aquos LC52D85U
With the deals my brother is going to get him from the store he works at, there is only a price difference of $100 between the two. The Sharp Aquos is $100 more.
Do any of you have opinions on either TV? What would would yall likely pick?
I know LG sucks donkey balls for cellphones it seems, but are they better rated in the LCD television market??
Seems my dad is leaning to the Sharp Aquos based on my brother and his fellow co-worker's opinion.
Though a quick check of CNet.com showed that the LG is rated a .5 star better.
I dont understand 90% of the crap they talk about that makes each good or not-as-good. Dont know what the pros and cons would really mean to the viewing enjoyment experience (but then, ive never liked or really cared abt all the fancy specs on TVs; in general i just want a TV that works who picture that doesnt suck, lol)
Thanks for any feedback. |

| Consumer studies have shown that for new TV owners most popular regret is not getting a bigger one. 52 is pretty good. |

This question is more for Orko;
Why would you need an ATSC tuner on an HDTV? Most of the sources nowadays will be HDMI (some Component) but when you get HD-TV from Bell or Sat TV they will always give you a box and that box will usually have HDMI/DVI/Component?
I have RARELY seen people use OTA stuff for TV? |

I'm enjoying my 20+ free channels with mine, thank you. I wish I was closer to Toronto where I could get more.
All new TVs have built-in ATSC anyways, law came into effect in the US about 2 years ago. |

Yup, I am also just unwilling to pay for bell or rogers' HD service. If you live downtown, man can you get a lot of channels.
The US switches over in Feb of next year, and Canada will switch over in August of 2011.
So for my friend, who only has antenna up at his cottage, he just bought a LCD tv, and made sure to have an ATSC tuner, because he is not going to be buying another TV in a couple of years. For most people, the ATSC tuner isn't exactly essential in the city, but a lot of people in rural areas rely on antenna. |
