wow...a quick skim reveals a LOT of misinformation and flat out untruths in this thread

re:1080p if youre sitting about 8' away from your screen you dont need 1080p unless youre looking at a 60" set.

re:interlaced vs. progressive scan. if youre looking at an LCD or plasma there are no tvs on the market that "do" interlaced video. any flat panel will scale whatever you send it to its native resolution, which will usually be 768p or 1080p...

re:resolution. if you ask me, resolution is probably 4th on the list of things you should be worrying about if you are shopping for a tv. first should be black level, 2nd contrast, 3 colour reproductio and 4th should be resolution. its very easy for an off brand manufacturer to throw a lot of resolution numbers around but i mean...what good is a 1080p tv if the blacks are grey(like all LCDs are, bar none), the reds are hot the greens are sickly and the contrast is ? you should shop for a tv with your eyes, not a stats page printed off of CNET.

re: lcd vs. plasma. if youre a hardcore gamer, LCD is probably the way to go. if youre planning on watching your tv in a room that has huge windows and no curtains, again, LCD is the way to go. if you dont meet either of these criteria though, youd be nuts not to get a plasma. plasmas offer way better black level, usually better contrast, and more often than not better colour reproduction. i had my heart set on a sony XBR LCD when i started shopping for TVs. after seeing every manufacturer of LCD on the market in action, when compared to several plasmas, i just couldnt pull the trigger on an LCD. i mean...LCDs dont make black, period. there is no LCD on the market that comes even close to reproducing the colour black. this is a scientific fact and its not up for debate. for my money the new 8th generation pioneer kuro line is the best TV on the market today. theyre available in 42", 50" and 60" flavours, with the 50" available in either 768p or 1080p...

re:sound. id agree. without at least some sort of surround sound system your time and money spent on the tv is wasted

oh and re: burn in. most newer plasmas from reputable brands have pixel orbiters, which really go a long way to combat IR (image retention) and burn in. it also helps to run them at lower contrast and brightness levels for the first 150 or so hours, until everything gets a chance to get worked in...

CHA CHING ! Smartest guy in the thread. but im surprised you mentioned gaming would be good on an LCD, wouldnt the fast action be subject to ghosting?

And DOUBLE BONUS POINTS for mentioning burn in...the technology by samsung is called Pixelshift. not sure what other manufacturers call it. furthermore, if you have a plasma rated for 60,000 hours, at 6 hours a day, every day, its around 25 years.

excellent point on the blacks as well...

if there is one post thats worth looking at in this thread, its this guy's

and triple bonus points for "USE YOUR EYES" its what i tell every customer...ffs they ask why an akai plasma is $1000 bucks when the same size pioneer is $2000....use your eyes, not the ing spec sheet.

also, when we have tv's on sale at costco, the signs dont have the specs anymore, its just the way they get printed, last weekend people asked us for the specs of a panasonic 50 inch, i just ask, "why? you cant tell that it is CLEARLY the sharpest, most vibrant looking tv here?"

btw, panasonic's and samsung are on equal terms for contention for top Plasma Manufacturer in my opinion, pioneer being third, and hitachi fujitsu fourth.

the panasonic and samsung produce the sharpest image, but the panasonic's use filters for enhancing the image and making it all look better. whereas the samsung has more natural looking color and the excellent sharpness on its own...the pioneer has a VERY DENSE High quality screen, probably why it produces the most accurate color, but just a little bit soft compared to the other two...just a bit.

bcope is the guy to listen to.

final word....

LCD is like looking at a painting, full of subtle colors...Plasma is like looking out your window on the most perfect day of summer...

i mentioned LCD for gaming not for performance issues, but for the lack of burn in. if you play halo 3 8 hours a day youre going to up your plasma sooner or later, no matter what kind orbiter you have.

with respect to the plasma manufacturers, were going to have to agree to disagree i guess. to my eyes the pioneer panels demolish everything else on the market, with the panasonics being a somewhat distant second. as far as regular brands go anyway...top shelf products like runco i havent spent much time with, but i can tell you with all certainty that there is nothing on the market even close to the black level and contrast that the 8th gen pioneers give. if you work at costco are you basing your comparison on sets youve seen there? were they 80 series or last gen 70 series? did you take them out of dynamic mode? have you seen the 6010 or 5010 1080p models? theres nothing soft about them to my eyes anyway...

i spent literally hours and hours and hours researching these sets...i bought the 5070 because, 768p resolution be damned, it was the best looking set on the market at the time, to my eye anyway. best colours by a long shot, and almost comparable blacks to the panasonic 700 series 1080p set. the 5080 came out 3 weeks later so i returned the 5070 and bought it. the lower black level and increased contrast made a world of difference. i recently returned IT and snagged the 60" 1080p 6010 model and, to my eyes anyway, its the absolute pinnacle of television...the picture is flawless...its like watching my old 32" HiScan XBR except its like 4 times the size...no loss in PQ at all. its almost unholy actually, how good it looks.

check the reviews online of the 8th gen pios. you wont find a bad one anywhere. its probably the most universally acclaimed consumer electronics product ive seen in ages. ive seen several reviews where the reviewer him/herself bought the review set rather tan give it back..haaha

im moving tomorrow and its boxed up right now..its killing me not being able to watch it right now

later

thank you for the info on gaming as well, i dont even own any consoles and never had any inclination to research gaming on plasmas.

the pioneers we have there are the 4270HD and 5070HD (i think) so thanks for the info that they are the previous generation...nothing can touch the pioneer in color accuracy, and im not sure what mode we have it set in...but we calibrate everything to what we feel looks the best anyways. but like i said, the panasonic and samsung units do have advantages in sharpness (over those 70 gen units at least). im not saying the difference is obvious, is negligable to the average consumer, we're just nitpicky
