Very different etymology. The word Jeep didn't evolve from the particular to the general; in fact, quite the opposite.

I was reading that a lot of people disliked Human After All once it was released and after they seen them live everyone enjoyed it. Took people time to warm up to it.
Hey that wireless music video part 1 of 2 I actually see people crowd surfing to daft punk. Plus yeah you know 3 minutes in with the lights is pretty nice.

I'm with the "just accept that 'techno' is an all-encompassing term" crowd. Now matter how hard you insist to people that techno is actually a specific subgenre of EDM and that EDM is the proper catch-all term, you're not going to undo 15 years of popular culture ingratiation--I don't care how vast an internet movement around the term EDM you think you're cultivating.
I see it as a 3 step process.
Step 1: Ignorance. You call everything techno because you don't know any better and that's the term you were raised on.
Step 2: Idealism and Zealotry. Armed with your new-found knowledge of what techno really means, you set out to change the world and tell everyone that EDM is the right term.
Step 3: Acceptance. After 4 years of zero progress (like, uh, me in college), you just accept that the people who electronic music matters to already know that EDM is the correct term, and that it's futile to convince regular folk otherwise.

Just call the stuff "dance music." You don't even have to use the cumbersome "electronic dance music" or the cryptic "EDM" to get your point across, at least in my experience.

your problem is you are too much a part of the popular culture to see it.
this is hardly an 'internet movement' - it's common knowledge all over the world in any music scene that has credibility.
i'm guessing you have a pretty music scene where you live. I lived in suburban ohio and I know how that goes. But I never deluded myself with some weird three step system.

Its ok to call Daft Punk "techno", but if thats the case and you want to substitute EDM with techno, then Armin van Buuren, Sasha, Paul Van Dyk, Dj Sammy, Aril Brikha, Eric Prydz all play "Techno". It is true tough that during early 90s many Europeans used to refer to some EDM as techno, especially the classic German/Belgian etc. Techno-Trance-Hardcore stuff. (not so much for House, which kept referring to it as...house)
But to be precise, Daft-Punk just play "Funky-House" people. FGS its the most famous genre of EDM!!!Not "technopolkapoptronica"... its just "Funky-House"!!! Never heard of it!? Also stuff like this:

I can remember in the begin 90's about all EDM was called House over here. Then Mellow-Rave-Trance-Techno-Hardcore etc. appeared. EDM was not commonly used.
Dance was commonly used at the end 90's for many festival EDM groups like Orbital, Underworld and Prodigy.
I didn't hear anyone complaining that they should call it differently back then, although he/she would have been right. People probably would say: I don't care how you call or should call it. To me it's still is Dance.
I go for the commonly used terms in my area, that makes live easy and not frustrating, even when I know it should be different.
