I was actually talking about city, yes
and obviously if need be, one should find a more or less safe spot to make a stop on a highway
I don't know, somehow I don't see it as safe to keep on driving full speed on the highway, while trying to fidget with your GPS

SO WHAT?

There are studies that proove that electronics are DANGEROUS to have in the car. When you are in the car you should focus on DRIVING.

SO WHAT if you have to pull over to answer a call (if you dont have hands free) or to change your route on your GPS? Playing with these devices while driving is not safe for you or other drivers.

Isn't it illegal to pull over on a highway without a valid reason? eg. your car won't go forward?? I wonder if "I'm programming my GPS" will be a valid reason.

Don't forget to turn your car off or they'll get you for idling.

Doubt it... especially if they can fine you..

Such is the conundrum of conflicting laws in a nanny state

Simple answer....just ban any mode of transport except walking. Actually, just ban us all from leaving our houses.

No, it doesn't, but i'm just trying to point out that its not just Ontario. Eventhough I think Dalton is a tard, there are justifications to some of these laws they are trying to impose.

Do you at least see the benefit of this law?

The thing is that Ontario takes ALL the laws from other places and institutes them all. As soon as dalton hears a nanny idea hes all over it.

I can see the merit of spirit in pretty much all the nanny laws out there. But the way they are implemented are completely wrong. Our laws increasingly treat adults like children instead of allowing them to make their own decisions about lifestyle, health, safety, environmental practices.

Im sick of being forced to do what other people think is right. I have a brain of my own and find it offensive to have the government in every facet of my decision making process

No because then they will ban heating and cooling in your houses and dictate your entertainemnt... wait isnt that what the smart meter and the CRTC are for?

Never mind...

I think i can press a couple of buttons in order to coordinate a map for my destination. And i can definately change the song on an ipod (same as changing the radio station as far as im concerned).

As i said. Id rather do that then do the incredibly dangerous deed of pulling off the highway and possibly getting rear ended and then trying to negotiate my way back into traffic every time i get a call, want to change my music, or get lost trying to find a location.

There is a difference between pressing a button on your radio and scrolling through a menu on your Ipod trying to find the song you want.

Im not an expert on GPS but often its more than a couple buttons. Every time I have used one I have to type in the address... thats a lot of thought and effort while driving (I did not do this while driving).

I do understand the 'where does it stop' argument. But as for these new changes I am 100% for it. I want the road to be a safe place for myself, my family, etc...

Would your mind change if a family member of yours died because some idiot was trying to type in an address on his gps? Be glad the gov't is protecting you and your loved ones.

You cant really believe you are just as good of an driver, and just as attentive when changing your GPS as you are when you are driving with both eyes on the road.
If you think you are... you need to get your head out of the clouds.

The gov't isnt doing this because they feel like it, they are doing this because studies show these activities are dangerous and accidents do happen because of these activities.

Oh and eating while driving SHOULD be illegal.

Ive been gone for awhile but here is an update on new bans or draconian restrictions that are being considered in our wonderful nanny province:

Toronto:

If you accidentally put a non recyclable in your recycling bin it's a $125 fine

If you don't put out a blue bin at all it's a $125 fine (Dont go on vacation folks!)

Bans on fast food containers/coffee cups(i guess we need to bring our own tupperware to mcdonalds?) and/or taxes on containers (because times arent tough enough already)

But hey, never fear. Because Miller is putting through ZERO taxes on new condo starts. At least somebody is benefitting here.

Ontario:

Broadening the pit bull ban to include new breeds (like we didnt see this coming)

Bans on cell phones and GPS devices in your car. I guess fumbling with a map is safer?

mandatory snow tires... meaning we will have to spend at least $500 on new tires and change them every spring and fall.

This is what happens when the public allows this mentality to flourish. As i always say... In Canada if you give the government an inch, they will take a mile. And then they will force you to measure it in Kilometres.

Discuss!

Did you not just say that if I dislike the zone I shouldn't have moved nearby?
On that point, why do you still live here?

I already suggested that a couple years ago. Still nothing :( Guess I'll have to avoid going to work some other way.

I always love those arguments. As if it's that easy to just pack up and move somewhere else.

Being in a business where I deal with car accidents everyday I have heard of more accidents due to people being distracted because of passengers in the vehicle or because they were changing the radio station then I have due to talking on the cell phone, eating, using GPS or text messaging.

So if we are going to ban these items that distract people from driving then lets ban everything else that could be a distraction. We might as well ban people from having accidents because those are a distraction to your driving.

Whether it's illegal or not people are still going to do it. I'd prefer it if the government focused on running the economy and all those other important things than "protecting me and my family". If I wanted government protection then I would've stayed in Communist Poland  Our roads aren't all of the sudden going to become more safe. Accidents won't stop happening all of the sudden either. All of this is to put your mind at ease so you THINK you're safer.
