| Apparently. I also forgot to mention that they will fine you if they find recyclables in your garbage as well. All in the name of the environment of course.... it has nothing to do with cutting costs and raising revenue. |

So what? you dont mind having officials root through your garbage to see whats in there with the idea of fining you for any error intentional or not? i think youll feel differently if one day you confuse what can and cannot be recycled and get a fine for it. When the blue box came out it was a government funded voluntary program desigened to reduce waste. Now it's turned into a fine generating money making scheme that is designed to easily turn law abiding citizens into law breakers.
And you dont see a problem with that? |

Still waiting for a source before I make any real comment.
I tried google and couldnt really find anything, but im a horrible searcher
I predict that they wont have 'officials' going house to house looking threw garbage...
But for big companies and such that are caught not recycling... That sounds more realistic
But please just any source will do.
Or are you just bored and making this up :p |

they've been always going up with bogus fees
the whole initiative for tenants to recycle more has been up and running since July 01, basically management pays less if there is more recycling and less garbage.. haven't seen any increases yet since I moved in |

I'm of two minds regarding this. While I do not like the idea of a municipal official rooting through my trash (not that there is anything of any real interest in there) I can also see another side here. The city funds its recycling programs by selling the material to manufacturers. Additionally, all the city's refuse is trucked to a landfill cite for disposal, which generates costs for the actual transport and handling costs at the cite. If one elects to throw a recyclable in the trash rather then the recycling bin that carries an opportunity cost as the city loses the money it would have otherwise made from the sale of the material to recyclers and a real cost in terms of the transport and disposal of the item. While the cost for each individual item is minimal it becomes significant when one examines the totality of the city. The end result of the lost revenue and increased cost is that money must be diverted from general funds to make up the difference. Ultimately, this means that all property tax payers are subsidizing those that choose to trash their recyclables... which I think is simply unfair. |

What mildly irks me is that instead of educating, the govt makes it a law.
Nobody likes to be forced to do things. Forcing people will only cause resentment, and people will be more lazy following the law.
Educate, and people voluntarily recycling, not only gets more people involved in the program, but improves people's outlook on the whole recycling program in general, getting more active participation.
I recycle as much as possible (and glad that I live in a house where my landlady is fanatical about recycling) but I was educated, and accept the whole recycling thing. |

I'm not sure I agree with the legislation, because a) they won't be able to enforce it, and b) it is too hard to distinguish between distracting and non-distracting actions.
As a pedestrian, I have noticed a huge decrease in the quality of driving in the GTA over the last five years. Drivers just are not looking both right and left anymore when they make a turn. So many times while I am walking, a car will roll out of a parking lot to turn right, the driver only looking left and to their cell phone. Any 'spare chance' drivers get, they take to text or make a call. |

Wow you really jumped in here with a different but similar topic didn't you???
Yah it looks like this thing will be passed...Total bull...
As if this law is going to eradicate stupid driving...
And now I have to suffer because a few ppl can't drive and talk on the phone at the same time...
What's next...ban changing the station or CD on the radio???
How about blowing your nose???...Or sneezing... you have to close your eyes while sneezing...
They should put sensors on the wheel at 3 and 9 so that if you take your hand off the wheel...instant, in the mail, ticket... |
