According to what I know, Deep House has a movement and a history behind it. Deep House has roots way back in chicago, new york and so on. To me that's what makes a style or genre established. Now Deep Techno; to me it's just a tag. It's like someone just adding an adjective in front of techno and making it a genre. You posted Domina, for example. Do me that's dub techno. Sure it can be deep, but so what? There's tons of trippy techno out there, doesn't mean I can go labeling everything Trippy Techno. I hate these genre wars, but that's just stupid.
|
that's just wrong. deep house is just another tag as well. acid house was made in chicago, jacking house was made in chicago, etc etc.
there is no deep house movement. there is no deep house history that is separable from house music
'adding an adjective' is exactly the process of making a genre. 'deep house' is exactly that lol.
i would also call domina 'dub techno' as well as 'deep techno'. why does it have to be either-or?
there are so many different styles of techno out there - it would be truly stupid to lump them all into one in a contest like this, which is intended to demonstrate the range of styles that exist within electronic music.
please don't tell me that hearing a mike shannon set is the same as hearing a dave clarke set. |

| Unless anyone can document that deep techno is an established sub-genre the way deep house is, it's pointless to argue about genre definitions as far as this challenge is concerned. Obviously, nobody's gonna have the exact same definition of a genre, which is why this challenge follows the general genre consensus. |

so what is credible documentation?
does there have to be an internet forum dedicated to it?
does this count? :p |

So far, all I see is someone listing a bunch of tracks saying "this is deep techno". Surely you can do better than that? |

but seriously - how do you define establishment in this case?
to 90% of the world, deep house isn't even a genre.
edit - the only difference between the terms deep house and deep techno is that more people use the former
does it need a wikipedia article like 'wonky techno'?
'acid techno' has as many results on google as 'deep techno', does that make it a genre? |

I didn't know Martin Roth and Marcus Schössow were considered techno DJs....
The point is, once you start questioning the general consensus on genres for this challenge (as valid as those questions may be), the whole concept falls apart, as noone will be able to agree on whether a genre is legit or not and what a genre encompasses. Therefore, unless you want to get stuck discussing genres for hours, being a "sheep" and just going with what is already out there is far more practical. |

i understand the need for 'convention' but like you say 'once you start NOT questioning the general consensus, you may as well call the whole thing 'TECHNO' like 90% of the united states would... we're drawing the line somewhere collectively. I happen to think the line should be drawn a little to one side in this case.
my point is simple, there is enough stylistic 'depth' if you will for it to merit its own mix in this competition, distinguished from other styles of techno.
i'm not trying to write a book on it or even a wikipedia article, lol |

I agree with this. I really didn't mean to start a big debate like this. The sub-genre hasn't been allowed, I've accepted this and made another choice so lets move on shall we. |

Great. I can't wait to hear how you're gonna break down this "stylistic depth" for us.
If you want to champion the cause of a sub-genre in techno, go ahead. I'm just saying that this challenge and its thread isn't the place for it. |

This was bound to happen, three pages of what is and what isn't a genre, who cares. Either include it, or if you want to discuss it make a thread in music discussion..
Let's just get back on point. |
