Because "anti-zionist" I find is being used as a nice way of cloaking anti-semitism. There is nothing wrong with criticizing Israel at all, I've just seen way too much one-sided criticism without explanations of the big picture. |
But a Zionist is an extremist Jew. So how is being anti-Zionist being one-sided or anti-semitic? |

| srsly guys, its purple. If it were anyone with any sort of sense, it'd be a good debate to have, but he's so irrational that it's pointless. Now he'll just collect your pictures and use them against you :p |

| "Zionism" is just the idea that Jews have a right to a nation where they are sovereign. It isn't an "extremist" idea in itself, although there are extremist versions of it. |

In the context and the way that it is exercised in Israel and Palestine, this is not the case. They are extremists. |

I enjoy poking jokes at it, and while I was never raised Jewish, my heritage on my fathers side is 100% Jewish. My grandparents, who are devout Jews (they aren't strict ones, but they are devout) even laugh and make Jew jokes. Carrying on this taboo is just a facet of our society that needs to end. Same with blacks and Muslims. The more we censor ourselves, the more we end up with these taboos.
To compound things, I thoroughly enjoy jokes like the one jonsun made. Why? Because while I find the atrocities committed by both the Nazis and the Russians (my own heritage mind you) completely wrong and unconcienable, I don't think we should treat it as an off limits thing. Humor is humor, no matter what it is. If you can't see the comedy in it, you take life too seriously. We aren't professing nor attempting to propagate racism or racist tendencies. As such, why treat the jokes as if that is what is happening? |
I don't mind racist humour.. but it should still need to be humorous. That was my point. I wasn't saying that somethings are not to be joked about. I just don't understand how a random phrase becomes witty by the inclusion of taboo subject matter. If a joke is funny and happens to be racist, fantastic. What I find weird is the idea that antisemitism (to take one example) is inherently funny in and of itself. Like if I say "shut the up!" it's not funny at all but if I say "SHUT THE UP ZIONIST COMMI-JOO ROFL" to some people it somehow becomes immediately funny because I'm being antisemitic.
It's not so much an insult to my Jewish heritage (similar to yours) as an insult to my sense of humour. I like fairly intelligent, witty humour and I like low-brow slapstick humour but the above example, to me doesn't fit in either... it's just not funny. |

Great example of the type of I, and I am sure Ania, was referring to. Stupid . OMG SHE SAID SOMETHING THAT WASN'T WHAT I WANTED TO HEAR! SHE'S RACIST! ugh such bull. |
pretty much this
Also something that drives me f*cking mental is that "jew" or "jewish" seems to have become some kind of ethnic slur? One time I was talking about one of my profs that I didn't like and I said
"he's a miserable old jew who lives alone with his cat"
and i remember one of my friends was like "shhhhhh Ania. Don't say like that"
WTF?!
would it have been different had I said
"he's a miserable old russian who lives alone with his cat" ?
"he's a miserable old presbytarian who lives alone with his cat" ?
I'm not going to whisper the words "jew" or "jewish" in my sentence, because some people get uncomfortable when hearing them.
One of my friends tried to explain this to me saying that it was branding someone based on an isolated idea... i.e. their "jewishness"
Well I'm ed if I understand that.
If your parents are both jewish, then so are you. And if you actively advocate your sovereignty then you should get used to the idea that you're going to be labelled. If someone calls me a Polak I'll smile and reply with "damn straight". I don't know any Polish ppl who would react otherwise.
I have no idea if I'm explaining my frustrations clearly here.
It just seems that jews have a fear of being labelled with anything. (An anti-semite might suggest it's because they want to blend in with every society and suck out all the money :o ) |

LOL, how did Jews "victimize themselves?" Seems to me the persecution that happened to them wasn't their fault. |
how isn't it their fault....if they weren't jews then they wouldn't have been victimized. |
