my intuition is that it's more common to be really one-dimensional like this when you are younger, and as you get older you start to appreciate the various nuances of different things, as well as different shades of moods/more complex emotions. When you're a kid there are only like three moods - a giddy, angry, and sad.
Please don't take this to be a criticism of trance music - it is a theory of one-dimensional taste of any music, really.
So if I ever met someone over 25 or so that only listened to trance or heavy metal or any one cultish type of music, I would have serious doubts as to that person's emotional development.

When I first discovered euro dance in the early 90s, I was pretty much the same way. It lasted about 3 years too, but then '92-'95 was a damned awesome time for euro dance!
I then discovered this underground music. You might of heard of it. It was called... trance!

I'm only into a couple of EDM genres such as progressive house((trance)) and morning psy.
As for non-EDM music, there is not much that I like either...maybe some movie soundtracks(which are EDM-based). I never liked popmusic, rock and all the mainstream stuff...so I'm kind of narrow-minded, too.
Generally your tastes evolves during you're aging as mentioned before but I also know a guy that is in his mid 30s still only listening to trance^^

Now you know two. But reason might be different.
With work and two young kids, there isn't much time left to listen at all. Most of the time I listen trance in my car when driving to work, also because that's the only way to play it really loud.
O, actually I now also listen to this, force to because of my 3 year old daughter :)
I guess there are worse things than being forced to look at these Belgium mega hit machines. Many Dutch, Belgium dad's like K3 too :)

Yeah I have three theories for why someone in his mid 30s would only listen to one kind of music, let alone a music that he used to listen to as a young person and that young people still gravitate towards.
1 - boring personality, fear of adventure or trying new things
2 - one-dimensional, underdeveloped emotional capacity
3 - escapism, nostalgia, fear of getting older
maybe if there was a 4th, it would be not enough time to find new music, but I think that since we are constantly confronted with media of all sorts, this is a bogus excuse. you have to like it to keep listening to it, or you would just stop listening entirely.

Exactly, Nef your list is a bit critical as there are people that just legitimately don't care much for music, as such their tastes usually revolve around a very limited spectrum or what they're fed in the media.
Saying someone has a boring personality or an underdeveloped emotional capacity because they're not very into music is quite stupid. There are many other facets of a person you could look into.

I think that what Adam is getting at is that "boring personality or an underdeveloped emotional capacity" are "symptoms" of being musically narrow-minded rather than a cause.
