Yes, that's true. The name of the genre in itself has always bugged me. However, my point stands that there is electronic music which is just as expressive, complex and deep as any other form of music currently available.

For me music is all about rhythm and melody, and i hardly find that outside EDM. Sure there is plenty music with rhythm and melody lol, but in this regard i find EDM to be superior to all other styles of music. I know a alot of music is about lyrics, and to be honest i dont know the lyrics for a single song, they mean nothing to me.

I am definitely not going to deny that, i wish i could broaden it more.. but its tough when everything i get exposed to in life is rap, pop and cheesy party music. |

That attitude could be more of a result of an underexposure (or misunderstanding - correct me if I'm wrong, but weren't you the one who called This Binary Universe IDM? Or was it Petran?), than the real state of affairs. |

Im not the one complaing, you guys are.
Im happy with listening to Electronic Dance Music 95% of the time, and will continue to do so until someone exposes me to something else i find worth listening to.
Digging for new and exciting EDM tracks is tough enough already. |

Not really. I'm sure there are records under the IDM umbrella that I haven't heard that are ridiculously challenging and obtuse, but I've certainly heard enough of the benchmark records that are talked about as the zennith of electronic sophistication to know there are records out there that don't market themselves as IDM that have as much to offer, if not more.
Regarding TBU, I can't remember calling it IDM. I certainly didn't in my review of it, but I genuinely don't see any argument that excludes it from being IDM. It's packed full of unusual time signatures, experimental production techniques, playful studio gimmicks, technical sophistication and unusual and powerful melodies. "IDM" as a genre is self-defeating because it basically represents experimentalism, convention-breaking and so on, properties that prevent you from drawing up a musical canon with recognisable genre elements. I'm sure I don't need to remind you that the original IDM definition included the likes of The Orb and the Sabres Of Paradise.
The only reason I see why TBU isn't regarded as IDM is because IDM snobs cringe at the thought of noted trance-man and N*Sync producer Brian Transeau intruding on their niche territory. |
