This is so depressing I can't read about it anymore. I usually never say this, but ignorance is bliss. I'll just keep doing what I can. Riding my bike, encouraging others to do so, and hope for the best. Really makes you question a lot about our society. |

It really is amazing that no matter the magnitude of the problem facing America, there is a 99% chance it will be turned into a political football and mucked to the gills in willful dishonesty and internecine quarrelsomeness. | offshore drilling needs to be banned until proper contingecy plans are developed. Thats it theres no debating about it. We cannot afford to have another disaster like the one that is ongoing. I don't doubt that its over 100,000 bpd. |

Name 1? How about DDT. Millions of malaria deaths because it was needlessly banned over utter bull.
Anyway my analogy is relative. Shutting down an entire industry because of irresponsibility by one company is rediculous. I'm not advocating for no rules or regs man; the "all or nothing" approach is for amatures. Airplane companies also have layers of safety measures that must be rigorously checked and re-checked. If negligence is conducted by Delta on safety precautions that results in a horrible plane crash, U.S. Air shouldn't have to pay the price. Because you see oiled up pelicans on tv, you're thinking with your emotions. Shutting down the remaining oil drilling industry will DESTROY the economy and untold amounts of jobs. Those people wouldn't just be off for 6 months... the rigs will pull up and move to other locations, and most of the regular workers will not get those jobs back. Are you fine with that? |

yea i'm ok with that because working on an oil rig is the only job a person can have thus we're ed but it's more important then say leaking radiation from the ground because billy in ohio ed up.
get out of here with that, if the oil industry agrees that new guidelines and regulations need to be put in place then shutting down for 6 months should be acceptable. What's being said is relative and I think you're trying to fight a point that has a very large awareness right now, an awareness that promotes the rehabilitation of a large ecosystem like the Gulf at the expense of BP and EVERY OTHER OIL COMPANY WORKING IN THE SAME REGION. You can fight this point if its logically justified, but the current state outweighs the detriments of losing a job, by far. |

But still, you don't seem to understand. THe effect of a plane crash and the effect of this oil rig disaster are in no way comparable. Again, a plane crash would not yeild such a destructive capacity on a mjor region. If you ever took statistics or chemistry, think about how you would apply "relative error" to your argument.
And to the other point, yes it would kill some jobs. This is the perfect time to get off of the oil tit. There are jobs in alternative energy. |
